GENERAL SUMMARYThe Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)-II is an advanced practice nurse who provides full scope midwifery care. The CNM provides care to the patient which is delivered during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. The CNM also provides care to the gynecologic patient in the clinic/office setting. High risk patients are cared for in consultation and collaboration with the medical team. The practice setting for the CNM-II will be in the Outpatient Clinic, contractually with Obstetrician’s offices, the Natural Birth Center, the Family Birth Center Triage and LDRs and the Post‑Partum unit with the focus on enhancement of clinical care, patient satisfaction, and safety.
Clinical care may include first assisting in OB surgical cases.
The CNM provides clinical services and management of mothers and babies as defined in the standing orders, policies, procedures and protocols for the CNM. Performs physical exams, collects, and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications. Formulates and implements prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, and interconceptional care as defined by midwifery scope of practice.
Communication and Consultation:
Role models advanced practice professional nursing through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision‑making, critical thinking and problem‑solving skills. Communicates effectively with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, and others and promotes patient and family centered care. Provides continuity, compassionate, culturally sensitive care to patients, and models this for students and colleagues.
A. Education / Training
- Graduate of Master’s Degree in Nurse Midwifery Program, accredited by the American College of Nurse Midwives or College of Nurse Midwifery.
B. Work Experience
- Obstetric nursing experience is required.
- Minimum 1 year of advance practice CNM experience is required.
C. Certification, Licensure, Registration
- State of Michigan licensure:
Registered Nurse. - Certified Nurse Midwife – American Midwifery Certification Board.
- Basic life support required.
- Neonatal resuscitation certification within 6 months of hire.
- Electronic fetal monitoring certification through the NCC within 6 months of hire.
- Certification in obstetrical ultrasound preferred.
D. Other Qualifications
- Written and verbal communication as well as computer skills required.
