CONCRETE FINISHER– JOB DESCRIPTION

Reports To: Concrete Foremen

Department: Concrete Crew

POSITION PURPOSE

The Concrete Finisher leads finishing operations on pours and owns responsibility for the quality and durability of the final product. This role builds on the responsibilities learned as a Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 Laborer, requiring mastery of all finishing processes, confident operation of power trowels, and the ability to train and direct lower-tier laborers. Finishers must be able to make real‑time decisions, adapt methods to site conditions, and ensure finishing meets project standards for appearance, strength, and longevity.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership (Finishing Crew)
  • Direct Tier 1-3 laborers during finishing operations, assign tasks, and keep the crew moving efficiently.
  • Make real‑time decisions and adjustments as conditions change while staying aligned with the Foreman’s direction.
Understand All Concrete Processes and Standards
  • Maintain a full understanding of concrete processes from preparation through curing.
  • Spot problems early with mix, grade, or finish, correct them immediately, and ensure work is done to the highest safety and quality standards.
  • Teach and model proper practices for lower-tier laborers.
Power Troweling
  • Safely and skillfully operate walk‑behind and ride‑on power trowels throughout all stages of finishing, adjusting blades, speed, and technique to achieve a flat, durable surface.
  • Take responsibility for training other crew members in power trowel use, so depth exists within the team.
  • Perform daily checks and maintenance on equipment.
All Aspects of Finishing
  • Execute every stage of finishing – striking, bull floating, edging, jointing, power troweling, curing, and detailing – with precision and consistency.
  • Adapt techniques to site conditions and concrete behavior.
  • Train lower-tier laborers in support roles, ensuring the entire crew contributes to a high‑quality finish.
Advanced Saw Cutting
  • Plan and perform saw cutting with precision, ensuring correct depth, spacing, timing, and alignment to prevent cracking and maintain structural integrity.
  • Coordinate cutting with the pour and finishing plan.
  • Oversee and train lower-tier laborers in supporting tasks while maintaining final accountability for results.
CORE VALUES IN ACTION (How We Expect This Role To Show Up) Selfless Leadership
  • You lead finishing with the mindset that the whole crew wins or loses together – no complaining, no ego, just results.
  • You help lower-tier laborers improve through clear direction and hands‑on coaching during pours.
  • You step in and do what’s needed to protect the pour outcome, even if it’s not the “fun” work.
Open Growth
  • You stay coachable and are always improving your finishing craft, techniques, timing, and decision‑making.
  • You’re willing to adjust your approach based on job conditions, mix behavior, weather, and foreman direction.
  • You learn from mistakes quickly and pass that learning down to the rest of the crew.
Work Hard
  • You bring consistent pace and urgency during finishing windows, especially when timing is tight.
  • You stay engaged from the first strike‑off through final detail work, curing, and protection.
  • You don’t fade late in the pour – your finish stays sharp through the end.
Ownership
  • You treat the final surface quality like your name is stamped into the concrete.
  • You catch problems early (grade issues, timing issues, overworking, surface defects, poor jointing/saw timing) and correct them immediately.
  • You protect the work after the pour by ensuring curing, edges, joints, and slab protection are handled correctly.
Direct Dialogue
  • You communicate clearly and early if something is off – mix issues, timing problems, manpower needs, or finish risks.
  • You give real‑time feedback to laborers to keep the pour moving smoothly and prevent mistakes.
  • You speak up when quality or safety is at risk, even when the job is moving fast.
