Summary

The Civil Laborer is a key field team member responsible for supporting the installation of underground utilities and site infrastructure with accuracy, efficiency, and safety. This role goes beyond basic labor by bringing hands‑on experience in pipe installation, grade awareness, and equipment support to help crews execute work correctly the first time.

This individual plays a critical role in keeping production moving by assisting operators, preparing materials, maintaining job‑site organization, and ensuring work is performed to line, grade, and specification.

Accountable To

Civil Foreman

Key Responsibilities Underground Utility Installation Support
  • Assist in the installation of storm sewer, water, sanitary, and other underground utility systems.
  • Support pipe‑laying operations including positioning, aligning, and preparing pipe for installation.
  • Hook pipe to excavation equipment using chokers and rigging, ensuring safe and secure handling.
  • Assist in setting precast structures such as manholes, catch basins, and concrete boxes by guiding them into position at proper line and grade.
  • Maintain awareness of grade and elevation requirements to support accurate installation.
Structure Assembly & Finishing
  • Mortar pipe penetrations within structures to ensure proper sealing and finish.
  • Install and adjust frames and grates to final grade using mortar and brick as required.
  • Assist in building up structures to finish elevation with attention to alignment and durability.
  • Clean out structures and assist with forming and pouring concrete inverts.
  • Ensure structures are completed to specifications and ready for inspection.
Site Preparation & General
  • Load, unload, and organize tools, materials, and equipment to support daily operations.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area to promote efficiency and prevent hazards.
  • Assist with potholing and exposing existing utilities using shovels and hand tools to verify locations safely.
  • Measure and cut pipe to required lengths using cut‑off saws and measuring tools.
  • Support crew needs throughout the day to keep workflow moving without delays.
Equipment Operation & Support
  • Operate small equipment such as skid steers and assist operators as needed to maintain production.
  • Use walk‑behind and remote compaction equipment to achieve proper compaction standards.
  • Work in coordination with operators during trenching, pipe installation, and backfill operations.
  • Handle rigging, signaling, and ground support responsibilities safely around heavy equipment.
Safety & Job Site Standards
  • Follow all company safety procedures and maintain proper use of PPE at all times.
  • Work safely around trenches, heavy equipment, and active job site conditions.

    Identify and communicate hazards, unsafe conditions, or concerns immediately.
  • Take ownership of maintaining a professional, organized, and hazard‑free job site.
