Job Summary
Rotating shift with main hours 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. New staff will work 2 weeks on each shift to learn operations before rotating based on team needs and PTO coverage. Operate, maintain, and repair major power plant and auxiliary equipment for all Hospital buildings, including boilers, chillers, pumps, generators, air compressors, and refrigeration systems.
Responsibilities- Operate and program equipment controls, making necessary adjustments to maintain appropriate steam pressure and energy efficiency.
- Monitor building utilities, take water samples, test results, and take immediate remedial action.
- Operate the BAS computer and maintain emergency generators.
- Troubleshoot and repair problems as they arise.
- Maintain daily written records, logs, and utility usage (natural gas, water).
- Monitor incoming utility information (city water pressure, electrical power, natural gas).
- Operate electric centrifugal and steam absorption chilled water systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance and annual upkeep on boilers and associated equipment, including teardown preparation for inspections.
- Conduct regular inspection rounds, identify malfunctioning equipment or security breaches, and take appropriate action.
- Shut down and restart boilers per predetermined schedules and adjust controls as needed.
- Respond to emergency maintenance calls during off‑hours as required.
- Ensure all critical power plant systems operate at peak conditions and resolve technical issues promptly.
- Maintain equipment standards and complete monthly preventive maintenance per the work order system.
- Communicate equipment problems to Engineering in a timely manner and order necessary parts.
- Utilize CMMS to document work assignments.
- High School Diploma or equivalent; completion of a vocational/trade school or associate degree program.
- Minimum four years of experience as a Boiler/Power Plant Operator in a multi‑building facility.
- Demonstrated strong technical knowledge and ability to recognize and address equipment failure immediately.
- Three years documented experience in powerhouse operations.
- LIC – Driver’s License, State of Michigan (upon hire).
- LIC – High Pressure Boiler Operator, State of Michigan (upon hire).
- LIC – 3rd Class Refrigeration Operator, State of Michigan (upon hire).
- Eligible for overtime status and able to work reasonable extended hours for priority repairs or coverage.
Range of Pay Between $31.38 and $37.80 per hour, based on experience.
