AI Engineer

Detroit Defense seeks a motivated, career-oriented AI Engineer to join our team. This role designs, builds, and integrates intelligent systems into software products, embedding conversational AI capabilities and applying machine learning for classification, prediction, and simulation tasks.

Troy, MI (On-site or Remote)

• Integrate conversational AI assistant features into software applications, owning the experience end-to-end.
• Design, implement, and evaluate tool/function calling for AI assistants.
• Write, test, and refine prompts; evaluate LLM and tool-calling accuracy.
• Build, train, and evaluate machine learning models for classification, prediction, and simulation.
• Collaborate with software engineers to integrate AI capabilities.
• Use Git for version control and contribute to shared repositories.
• Document work and communicate results to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Support deployment, testing, and iteration of AI capabilities.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Experience integrating large language models via APIs (function / tool calling, structured outputs).
• Foundation in machine learning and data science concepts.
• Working knowledge of Git and collaborative software development workflows.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• U.S. person able to obtain/maintain a U.S. Government Secret clearance.

• Proficiency in Python and/or C#.
• Experience building chat/assistant interfaces or agentic systems in production.
• Familiarity with tool-calling/agent frameworks, RAG, and vector databases.
• Experience defining evaluations for LLM and tool-calling reliability.
• Internship, academic, or project experience building and deploying models end-to-end.
• Exposure to software engineering fundamentals: APIs, testing, CI/CD, containerization.
• Use of Git Lab for issue tracking and configuration management.
• Familiarity with secure AI/compute environments.
