Job Summary
Position:
Combination Driver/Dockworker. The role involves loading and unloading freight at the service center and driving tractor‑trailers to customer sites or other service centers while maintaining safety, accuracy, and timely delivery in compliance with DOT regulations.
- Load and unload freight on trailers using forklift, pallet jack, or manual methods.
- Apply loading techniques such as tight or cross loading.
- Transport freight continuously within the service center.
- Use the Dock Yard Management System to track shipment locations.
- Read and interpret shipping labels and complete shipping paperwork (orders, manifests, freight bills, damage reports).
- Hand‑load, rewrap, or stack freight as required.
- Secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, or rope.
- Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented environment.
- Operate the tractor‑trailer safely within DOT regulations, including hours of service, inspections, maintenance, and hazardous materials transport.
- Meet or exceed U.S. Department of Transportation medical standards.
- Pass required drug and alcohol tests.
- Complete orientation/training program instructions by an Old Dominion qualified trainer.
- Be available for third shift, evening, weekend, and some holiday work to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Valid ClassA CDL with double/triple trailer, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements.
- At least 12 months of tractor‑trailer driving experience, or completion of a state‑certified driving school or Old Dominion Truck Driver Training program.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to operate a hand‑held mini‑computer and use a two‑way radio or telephone.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations and vehicle safety/control systems.
- At least 22 years of age.
- Pass required medical, drug, and alcohol tests.
- Sit and remain alert while driving up to 11 hours.
- Walk or stand for up to 8 hours per shift on non‑forgiving surfaces.
- Frequent squatting, kneeling, and lifting freight up to 500lb. with forklift or manually.
- Push, pull, lift, and carry freight up to 100lb. over distances of up to 100ft.
- Operate forklift and tractor‑trailer controls requiring reach and coordination.
- Work in hot or cold climates and in noisy or odorous environments.
- Install or remove tire chains when required by weather conditions.
Employees may work with other personnel while loading/unloading, inside vehicles or trailers, across all weather conditions, and at varying noise and lighting levels. Work may occur in extreme hot or cold climates.
Working Days and ShiftMonday through Friday, AM/PM shifts. Flexibility for third shift, evening, weekend, and some holiday work is required.
