Old Dominion Freight Line invites motivated individuals to join our OD Family as Local Pursued & Delivery (P&D) or City Drivers. This role requires a dedicated commitment to safety, accuracy and timely freight delivery across our service centers and customer locations.

Job Summary

Local P&D or City Drivers operate various tractor-trailer combinations between company service centers and customer facilities or work sites within the service center’s geographic area. Responsibilities include loading/unloading freight, maintaining DOT compliance, and ensuring freight arrives on time and in excellent condition.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations, including hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and transportation of hazardous materials.
  • Meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and satisfactorily pass required drug and alcohol tests.
  • Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manual methods while complying with state and federal DOT guidelines.
  • Utilize various loading techniques (e.g., tight or cross loading) to secure freight inside trailers.
  • Use the Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations and read and interpret shipping labels.
  • Complete required freight movement forms such as shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage movement reports, and exception forms.
  • Secure freight with appropriate tools and supplies (pallets, straps, rope) and maintain quality loading of all trailers.
  • Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented environment.
  • Be available to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
Job Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple trailers, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements.
  • 12 months of prior tractor‑trailer driving experience, or completion of an approved driving school, or the Old Dominion Truck Driver Training program.
  • Acceptable motor vehicle record and a clean driving history.
  • Ability to read, write, speak English, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Possess a motor‑handheld tablet and good oral communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems, DOT regulations, and hazardous material transportation.
  • Meet medical standards and pass required drug and alcohol tests.
  • At least 22 years of age.
Physical Demands
  • Drive and remain alert for up to 11 hours.
  • Stand, walk, squat, kneel and lift freight up to 500 lbs, and occasionally handle loads more than 300 lbs.
  • Perform frequent lifting and carrying of freight weighing 1–100 lbs for distances up to 100 feet.
  • Load and unload full trailers up to 50,000 lbs.
  • Operate manual transmission, shift foot pedals and manage emergency equipment such as tire chains.
  • Demonstrate cognitive, auditory and visual processing skills for safety inspections and navigation.

The role involves exposure to various environments, including working with freight in enclosed trailers, driving in all weather conditions, and handling noise and lighting variations.
