Road Construction Worker
Perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual tasks. Operate and perform routine maintenance on equipment used in road construction. Assist in performance of skilled manual tasks. Do related work as required.
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Perform simple tasks in repairing road surfaces, such as removing loose material, pouring oil or spreading asphaltic materials.
- Perform a variety of bridge maintenance and repair activities including cleaning decks and cutting brush. Assist in other maintenance and repair activities, including guardrail repair and installation, deck sealing, and cement work.
- Perform heavy manual labor in cutting brush and trees, including feed brush and tree limbs into chipper, and operate chain saw. Operate bucket truck (front or rear).
- Divert traffic around hazards or crews in roadways and through work zones.
- Perform heavy manual labor, including digging ditches, cleaning, and installing culverts or drain tiles, raking asphalt, removing obstacles, litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and adjacent area, hand loading and unloading all types of materials, washing and cleaning vehicles. Perform simple manual work connected with patching and repairing roadways. Install and repair guard rails, fences, signposts.
- Operate front end loader in moving earth and rocks, filling trucks, or other operations.
- Operate equipment such as graders, skid loaders, excavators, backhoes, rollers, trucks, tractors, in the maintenance and construction of highways and bridges.
- Operate self-propelled roller or hand compactors for base compaction and compaction for gravel and asphalt roads.
- Provide traffic control for incidents and accidents, set up and remove message boards, signs, traffic cones, and report situations to emergency responders, Director, Foreman, and Administrative Manager, assist as needed.
- Operate tack truck for asphalt paving and patching operations. Operate crack sealer.
- Operate equipment of any type to the extent of transferring the equipment from one location to another, to include equipment such as the bucket truck, truck and empty trailer, backhoe, and grader. Chip icy roads and/or plow snow. Assist in fabrication and installation of signs.
- Perform routine service and maintenance of equipment. Maintain tools and equipment in proper condition.
- Use a variety of hand tools to include chainsaw, jack hammer, shovels, lutes, concrete or asphalt cutter, pole saw, circular saws, grinders, compactors, and power washers.
- Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work areas. Comply with all County policies and procedures.
- Maintaining regular attendance during the assigned work schedule as an essential requirement of this position. The ability to serve and meet in person with members of the general public, co-workers and others is required.
- Work under the direct supervision of a lead worker or Foreman who assigns and reviews work according to established policies, procedures, and standards.
- Perform any such other work as deemed necessary by the Director.
Supervision is not a normal responsibility of this position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and minor repair of motor equipment. Knowledge of the methods and materials used in road construction and vehicle maintenance.
- Ability to efficiently and effectively operate equipment used in the performance of duties assigned.
- Ability to operate equipment safely under adverse conditions.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, County officials and the public.
- Ability to withstand exposure to varying weather conditions and exertion of significant physical effort.
Experience & Education
- One year of work experience in road construction, maintenance, and repair, including experience in the operation of motorized road construction equipment preferred.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Any satisfactory combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, may be acceptable.
Certifications, License, Registrations
- Must possess or acquire within three (3) months of hire a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with tank endorsements and must be insurable under the County's liability insurance coverage.
- Must possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver's Permit before start date if hired.
- Pay rate will begin at $19.00 per hour with permit only. Increase to $20.00 per hour when CDL obtained.
