Job Title: Environmental Educator
Schedule- Monday–Thursday, 8:00 am–4:00 pm
- Occasional Fridays as needed for programming (particularly during field season)
- Occasional evening or weekend programs may be required
- SWEP programming follows the TTUSD school calendar and includes a six-week summer break
- SWP rents office space at the Lift Cowork, Conference and Wellness Center in Truckee, CA, otherwise field programming is in the Tahoe Truckee region
- Programming primarily serves North Tahoe and Truckee, CA
Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships (SWEP) has over 30 years experience working with K-12 students in the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District (TTUSD), which spans from Donner Summit and Truckee to the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. We are seeking an experienced educator to deliver existing in-school and field-based programs and to work with the Program Director to develop and expand SWEP’s programming.
Duties and Responsibilities- Lesson Planning and Facilitation: Deliver in-school and field-based programming for K–12 students, including special lessons and hands‑on learning experiences for programs and events
- Partner Relations: Assist with establishing and maintaining working relationships with agencies and schools in the Tahoe Truckee region and beyond
- Waste Management: Support education, outreach, and management of SWEP’s waste diversion program with TTUSD (including staff, students, kitchen staff, and custodians)
- Volunteer Coordination: Assist with recruiting and coordinating educational interns and volunteers
- Community Outreach: Represent SWEP at public events such as Truckee River Day, Earth Day, Native Species Day, and other community events
- Program Reporting: Assist with program reporting for grants
- Other duties as assigned
- 3+ years of experience working with youth and the general public in environmental education and outreach
- Passion for working with K–12 students and connecting them to their local community and environment
- Background in education, environmental studies, and/or a science‑related field
- Effective oral and written communication skills with strong interpersonal abilities
- Friendly, personable, and outgoing disposition
- Ability to work as both a team member and a leader
- Self‑starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality work
- Well‑organized with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and shifting priorities
- Demonstrates ability and desire to learn quickly and independently
- Excellent computer skills, including fluency with Google applications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
- Valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle
- Ability to pass a background check
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in education, environmental studies, or science from a four‑year college or university
- Teaching credential or currently pursuing teacher certification
- Outdoor Education Certification
- Spanish fluency
SWEP’s Environmental Educator position encompasses a range of in‑school, field, and office‑based responsibilities. In‑school duties include delivering environmental education programs, science festivals, and family science nights within TTUSD schools. Fieldwork includes leading student field trips, nature outings, and service restoration activities. While typical hours are Monday–Thursday, 8:00 am–4:00 pm, this position requires occasional evening or weekend engagements. Physical requirements include lifting up to 35 pounds, transporting supplies, and hiking long distances with students.
Staff time is split between the office, field sites, and school campuses. Meetings and instruction may occasionally take place via video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Google Meet, etc.).
