Summary

The MRI Technologist Team Lead works under the direction of a Radiologist to perform Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures in an independent, professional manner with little or no supervision. The Technologist assumes responsibility for the safety of their patients and colleagues in their designated work area and takes corrective action when necessary to maintain such safety. At the direction of the Radiology Leadership, the Team Leader oversees technical procedures, patient care, and workflow of the team to ensure safe and effective patient care and acts as a role model and facilitator working in collaboration with all levels of departmental personnel.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Correctly identifies patients by name, wrist identifiers, date of birth, etc.
  • Provides accurate information to physicians, patients and employees while maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Ensures safety of each MRI patient and medical staff while in the high magnetic field environment.
  • Screens patients and other medical staff prior to entering the magnetic exam room for potential contraindications, which may be harmful to the patient, staff or the MRI equipment.
  • Operates all MRI equipment necessary to complete examinations as directed by the Radiologist in charge of each exam.
  • Utilizes a variety of the following but not limited to: surface coils, pulse gating, cardiac gating, respiratory gating and patient monitoring equipment.
  • Develops resources—protocol book, implant book etc.—to support the team.
  • Uses independent judgment to tailor exams to each patient and their particular medical problem.
  • Starts IVs, administers contrast injections and monitors patients closely for contrast reactions.
  • De-access ports, assess patency and administer heparin as ordered by physician.
  • Demonstrates the ability to react to a potentially dangerous "quench" situation.
  • Maintains awareness of the oxygen‑monitoring system in each exam room and demonstrates knowledge of what steps to take in case of an alarm.
  • Constantly monitors patients' condition while in the magnet and promptly detects any changes in their condition.
  • In the event of a medical emergency, removes the patient from the MRI exam room immediately before the medical emergency team takes over the patients' care.
  • Performs daily MRI Quality Control (QC) tests as recommended and takes corrective action as needed.
  • Maintains Equipment Preventative Maintenance (PM) schedule and ensures all maintenance is scheduled and is completed.
  • Reports problems related to the MRI equipment, work methods, or procedures to the DI leadership promptly.
  • Maintains knowledge of multi‑planner cross‑sectional anatomy and provides education to the MRI team for various organ systems, in mult‑planner reformatting of 3‑dimensional data, and manipulating MIP (Maximum Intensity Projection) data required for MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) exams.
  • Follows workflow protocols: e.g., sends MRI images to the PACS system, etc.
  • Maintains job‑related skills, competencies, and required certification(s) or registries.
  • Provides leadership, mentoring and education to develop and maintain an effective, well‑trained staff based on performance standards and competencies.
  • Initiates/maintains accreditations specific to MRI (e.g., ACR) and provides follow‑PI plans in working with DI leadership if there are citations or improvement plans needed.
  • Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
  • Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.
