Overview

The Fitness Center Attendant supports a safe, welcoming, and inclusive fitness environment by modeling the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. This role provides proactive member engagement on the fitness floor, offers basic coaching on the safe and proper use of cardio and strength equipment, and connects members with appropriate programs, instructors, and resources to support their wellness goals.

The attendant maintains the cleanliness, readiness, and organization of equipment and spaces; monitors member conduct and safety; responds calmly to incidents and emergencies; and follows all YMCA policies, procedures, and mandated reporting requirements. Additional duties are performed as assigned to ensure a high-quality member experience in alignment with YMCA standards and branch procedures. This position supports the mission and work of the Y by creating a safe, welcoming fitness floor where all members feel respected, supported, and connected.

Responsibilities
  • Model the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility; greet members and build positive connections on the fitness floor.
  • Provide attentive floor coverage; answer questions; share program information, schedules, and resources; and support members’ personal wellness goals within scope of role.
  • Coach safe and proper use of strength and cardio equipment; offer basic modifications and refer members to instructors/trainers as appropriate.
  • Maintain cleanliness and readiness of equipment and spaces; complete routine wipe-downs, re-racking, and checks per schedule.
  • Monitor for risk/safety concerns and member conduct; respond promptly and calmly to incidents and emergencies; complete required reports.
  • Follow YMCA policies, emergency procedures, and mandated reporting/abuse-prevention protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support a high-quality member experience.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of and interest in fitness/strength training; experience with strength equipment preferred.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications (or ability to obtain within Association timeframe).
  • Observant, safety-conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from diverse backgrounds; commitment to inclusion and ADA compliance.
