SUPERVISOR OF TRANSPORTATION

Accountability

The Supervisor of Transportation shall be directly responsible to the Director of Operations.

General Job Definition

The Supervisor of Transportation is responsible for the management and oversight of all transportation functions for Trumbull Public Schools.

This position is responsible for the daily onsite management of all transportation operations throughout the school district. This position requires ongoing daily, weekly, and monthly visits to various locations such as the bus depot, all accident/breakdown locations, and school buildings to review fleet conditions and maintain operational efficiencies in daily operations regarding routes, bus drop off, and pick-ups.

Duties and Responsibilities

The general duties and responsibilities are as follows:

1. Plans, revises, and manages, with department staff's assistance, the creation and maintenance of all bus routes as needed. Ongoing review and maintenance of all bus routes to ensure timeliness and staying within budget.

2. Coordinates the scheduling of buses for daily special programming, athletic teams, after-school activities, educational trips, field trips, and special education students.

3. Plans and revises summer school bus routes as needed for academic, enrichment, and special education programs.

4. Supervises on-site semi-annual bus evacuation drills.

5. Supervises and presents bus safety programs for elementary school students as needed.

6. Assists elementary school principals with orientation of kindergarten students and parents to the school bus transportation assignments, policies, and procedures.

7. Investigates and resolves complaints about routes, buses, and drivers received from school officials, parents, or members of the public. Position will be the point of contact for staff, students, parents, public for transportation issues and questions.

8. Monitors and works with Administration to resolve problems with ridership, timeliness, traffic flow at all schools. Completes regular ongoing visits at the schools regarding safety, student ridership, bus drop off positioning, and bus line up ordering to maintain efficiencies and identify potential optimizations.

9. Prepares specifications and bids for transportation contracts.

10. Monitors safety training for contracted school bus drivers.

11. Acts as liaison with the management of the contracted bus services. Evaluates management and operation of contracted bus service. Evaluates and assesses fines and other vendor performance metrics and reports. Provides direct communication to contracted bus service for issues and resolution and informs district supervisor of outcomes and concerns.

12. Prepares, presents, and administers the transportation budget in collaboration with their district supervisor.

13. Prepares state and federal reports and grant applications which relate to bus transportation.

14. Supervises the interschool messenger service and mail deliveries between central office, schools and post office, provided by the contractor.

15. Supervises distribution of mail received in Administration Office from the Post Office and supervises post preparation of outgoing mail from all schools and central office to Post Office.

16. Supervises Transportation Department staff including daily work assignments, department operational work flow, employee training, hiring, and discipline.

17. Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisors.
