Staff Accountant

Location: Trussville, AL
Schedule: Fully Onsite
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Compensation: $60,000–$80,000 + bonus

Position Overview

We are seeking a Staff Accountant to join our accounting team in a hands-on, process-focused role with significant responsibility for fixed assets, Cap Ex, prepaids, reconciliations, month-end close, and ERP accounting. This position is ideal for an early-career accounting professional who enjoys improving processes, solving problems, and taking ownership of their work.

The Staff Accountant will work closely with accounting leadership and upper management, including ownership of fixed asset budgeting and planning. The role also provides exposure to audits, cost accounting, operational accounting, and process improvement, with a strong opportunity for career advancement to a Senior Accountant within approximately two years based on performance and development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage fixed asset accounting, including loaned equipment and Cap Ex activity
  • Maintain and reconcile fixed asset and prepaid accounts as part of the month-end close
  • Prepare journal entries and perform subledger accounting
  • Complete balance sheet reconciliations and investigate discrepancies
  • Manage prepaids related to contracts, agreements, and operating expenses
  • Monitor accounts throughout the month and make necessary ledger corrections
  • Perform budget variance analysis and identify trends or discrepancies
  • Own fixed asset budgeting and planning, including direct communication with upper management
  • Utilize ERP systems to maintain accurate accounting records and improve processes
  • Participate heavily in the annual audit process, including coordinating and managing information requests
  • Provide support with cost accounting activities
  • Assist an internal service department with operational accounting needs, including billing, receiving, and reconciliations
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and efficiencies
  • Support month-end and year-end close activities while ensuring compliance with GAAP
  • Take ownership of assigned accounting processes and contribute to ongoing process improvements
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • 1–4 years of accounting experience
  • Experience with fixed assets and general accounting required
  • Experience with month-end close and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Strong understanding of GAAP
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
  • Audit experience required
  • Some cost accounting experience preferred
  • Experience working with an ERP system required; JDE preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to analyze issues, identify discrepancies, and develop practical solutions
  • Comfortable working independently while collaborating with accounting and operational teams
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional who enjoys owning processes rather than simply processing transactions. They should be comfortable working through detailed accounting issues, improving inefficient processes, and taking responsibility for the accuracy of their work.

This is a great opportunity for someone early in their accounting career who wants broad exposure to fixed assets, Cap Ex, budgeting, reconciliations, audit, ERP systems, and operational accounting, while building toward a Senior Accountant position.

JDE experience is preferred but not required for candidates with strong ERP experience and the ability to learn new systems quickly.

Career Growth

This position offers a defined opportunity for advancement. The goal is to develop the right individual into a Senior Accountant within approximately two years
, with increased responsibility across accounting operations, analysis, budgeting, and process ownership.
