Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and inspect all engineering activities involved in the City’s traffic, roadway, and drainage systems.
  • Review plans and drawings to determine if construction projects can be constructed as drawn.
  • Meet with contractors and internal professionals to review plans and suggest changes.
  • Review private and municipal construction projects to ensure compliance with state, county, and city building codes.
  • Enforce city ordinances.
  • Investigate and respond to citizen requests/complaints about public infrastructure, determining if repairs or modifications are required.
  • Monitor construction projects to ensure compliance with codes, ordinances, and laws, and take appropriate actions when violations occur.
  • Oversee the process to announce, collect, assess, and accept bids from contractors for public infrastructure projects.
  • Evaluate project proposals, plans, and drawings for accuracy and completeness.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Driver’s license.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Alabama (or ability to obtain a PE License within Alabama through reciprocity within 6 months of being hired).
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering.
  • Experience reading and reviewing plans for infrastructure improvement projects (e.g., bridge/roadway construction, traffic planning, stormwater management).
  • Experience working with county and state organizations (e.g., ALDOT, ADEM, etc.) on roadway construction/improvement projects.
Critical Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Alabama Department of Environmental Management laws dealing with construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of basic engineering and construction methods and terminology.
  • Knowledge of basic residential, commercial, and industrial construction materials.
Work Environment

Work is primarily conducted indoors in an office setting with occasional field visits to outdoor worksites.

Use of standard office equipment (computer, phone, copier, etc.) is required.

Handling of various equipment related to inspecting construction sites, including but not limited to calculator, measuring devices, levels, etc., is required.

Job may require exposure to potentially hazardous work conditions (e.g., working in and around traffic, construction zones, heavy equipment).

Job may also require exposure to inclement weather when working outdoors (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind).

Physical Demands

Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing.

May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
