Laboratory Manager - Core Lab

Lab Corp is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Manager to manage Core Lab operations for UAB St. Vincent’s East Hospital (Birmingham, AL) and UAB St. Vincent’s Freestanding Emergency Department (Trussville, AL).

$10,000 Sign On Bonus (External Candidates Only)

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

• Direct the daily operational activities of the Core Lab at UAB St. Vincent’s East and the Lab at UAB St. Vincent’s FSED, covering both technical and non‑technical operations.
• Manage department staffing, monitor production schedules, and adjust coverage and overtime as needed.
• Supervise, train, and mentor laboratory supervisors; hold responsibility for all departmental staff.
• Ensure the diagnostics laboratory provides market‑leading service levels and meets corporate service metrics for turnaround time.
• Resolve client inquiries and operational issues promptly in consultation with the Medical Director, Technical Director, QA, and other laboratory leadership.
• Maintain compliance with corporate, state, and federal regulatory requirements (CAP, CLIA, State, ISO, etc.) related to personnel safety and laboratory quality.
• Assist in developing and implementing laboratory procedures, equipment installation, and method validation.
• Recruit, hire, evaluate, train, and develop qualified staff.
• Communicate effectively with leadership, clients, sales, corporate operations, and direct reports.
• Conduct departmental meetings and ensure appropriate communication.
• Investigate deviations from procedures and implement corrective actions.
• Maintain technical knowledge of laboratory testing in the assigned department(s).
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

• Bachelor’s degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a non‑traditional degree that meets CLIA & State regulatory requirements.
• Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Technologist in a clinical diagnostics laboratory.
• Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience managing direct reports.
• ASCP certification is required.

• Previous experience managing people leaders.
• Prior experience in a Hospital Core Lab.

• Experience in a high‑volume clinical laboratory environment is preferred.
• Strong working knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and relevant state regulations.
• Understanding of laboratory operations, policies, and procedures.
• Proven success in training and developing technical and non‑technical employees.
• Ability to problem‑solve and provide solutions under minimal supervision.
• Proficient with Laboratory Information Systems and Microsoft Office.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
• Comfortable making decisions in a changing environment.
• Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position.

This position will oversee the operations and administration of clinical laboratory testing for the Core Lab at UAB St. Vincent’s East and the Lab at UAB St. Vincent’s FSED. The Laboratory Manager will create, implement, and manage policies, procedures, and practices to ensure optimal performance of the diagnostics laboratory.
