Position Summary

The Welder is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and repairing steel components and structures by applying appropriate welding techniques in accordance with blueprints, work orders, and quality and safety standards. This role requires the ability to read and interpret technical drawings, select proper welding methods and materials, and produce sound welds that meet company and industry specifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, sketches, and work orders to determine dimensions, materials, and welding requirements.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment to perform MIG, TIG, and/or stick (SMAW) welding on carbon steel, stainless steel, and other metals as required.
  • Select appropriate welding technique, rod/wire, and settings based on material type, thickness, and joint design.
  • Fit, align, and tack-weld component parts according to specifications, using clamps, jigs, and fixtures as needed.
  • Inspect completed welds for defects such as porosity, undercutting, or warping, and grind, buff, or repair welds to meet quality standards.
  • Operate and maintain related shop equipment, including cutting torches, plasma cutters, grinders
  • Perform routine maintenance on welding equipment and report malfunctions or needed repairs to the supervisor.
  • Measure and mark dimensions on materials using calipers, tape measures, and squares to ensure accurate fabrication.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), fire prevention practices, and safe handling of gases and equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with 5S or similar housekeeping standards.
  • Accurately complete production logs, quality checklists, and other required documentation.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, quality control, and other production staff to meet daily production goals and deadlines.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum of 2 years of hands-on welding experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment required.
Must pass an on-site welding test as a condition of employment, demonstrating proficiency in the welding process(es) used in production.
Proficiency in one or more welding processes (MIG, TIG, stick) on structural steel; multi-process capability preferred.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and technical specifications.
AWS (American Welding Society) certification a plus, or willingness to test and certify to company/customer standards.
Basic math skills for measuring, calculating dimensions, and reading tape measures/calipers.
Working knowledge of shop safety practices, including OSHA regulations relevant to welding and fabrication.
Ability to operate hand and power tools associated with welding and metal fabrication.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Reliable attendance and ability to work overtime as production needs require.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and reach for extended periods.
Frequently lifts and/or moves materials and equipment up to 50 pounds; occasionally lifts heavier loads with assistance or equipment.
Ability to work in various positions, including overhead, confined spaces, and elevated platforms as needed.
Regular exposure to bright light, heat, fumes, and noise associated with welding operations.
Must be able to wear required PPE, including welding helmet, gloves, protective clothing, and safety footwear, for extended periods.
Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate welding equipment and hand tools safely and accurately.
