Salary: $20.99 to $27.47 per Hour

Summary

Under the direct supervision of teachers, perform a variety of duties in assisting a licensed teacher with the implementation of instructional programs for preschool students, including those receiving early childhood special education services. May function in an instructional setting separate from the teacher, exercising a considerable degree of skill with supervision within the framework of a teacher-planned and evaluated program. Prepare instructional materials, maintain classroom discipline, and conduct planned activities using teacher‑designated methods.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement planned activities using teacher‑designated methods and materials for individuals and small groups to support instruction.
  • Prepare instructional materials using a typewriter, word processor, duplicating equipment, resource materials, AV equipment, and similar tools.
  • Assist in maintaining classroom discipline and demonstrate a high level of mental functioning and emotional control.
  • Make independent judgments within prescribed policies and procedures, employing good judgment in a variety of situations, including emergencies.
  • Be an effective member of an educational support team; possess hearing and visual abilities within normal range and motor skills sufficient for walking, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
  • Communicate proficiently in English;
    Spanish usage, grammar, and punctuation skills are preferred.
  • Provide back‑up support to other positions during absences or work overload, and attend district‑provided in‑service and educational activities.
  • Escort and monitor students in various environments, including classroom, playground, cafeteria, buses, and field trips.
  • Assist in administering assessments, implementing educational and behavioral programs designed by the classroom teacher, and monitoring student completion of assignments.
  • Correct objective tests and assignments, record scores and student attendance, and maintain instructional materials and files.
  • Assist with student restroom needs, participate in restraint training as appropriate, and practice instructional practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Use appropriate communication with employees and students, exercising tact, courtesy, and good judgment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, and other employees.
  • Work accurately and with attention to detail to meet deadlines; understand and execute oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.
  • Operate standard office equipment such as typewriter, computer terminal, word processor, calculator, and photocopier effectively.
  • Perform physical duties as assigned, including lifting up to 25 pounds, carrying supplies, and engaging in activities such as catching children who run.
  • Spanish language skills are preferred.
Essential Qualifications and Education
  • 72 quarter hours of credit or an associate’s degree (or higher), or meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate knowledge and ability in reading, writing, and mathematics through a recognized assessment (e.g., Praxis Parapro test).
  • High school diploma with reading and writing emphasis.
  • Two years of post‑secondary college education; if absent, must pass a proficiency test developed by the Department of Education.
  • Associate’s degree in Education is preferred.
  • Oregon driver’s license or reliable transportation.
  • Medical First Aid Card certified within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Additional certifications/training such as blood sugar testing, bee sting management, and medication dispensing may be required.
  • Strong conflict‑resolution skills, confidentiality, active listening, emotional regulation, positivity, and team spirit.
  • Ability to solve practical problems, handle variable situations with limited standardization, and interpret instructions in written, oral, or visual form.
