Storm / Sewer Technician II
The City of Tualatin is recruiting for a Storm/Sewer Technician II to join our Storm/Sewer Division. The successful candidate will play a key role in protecting the livability and environmental health of our community by maintaining the City’s stormwater and sewer infrastructure in optimal working condition. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the community, support the quality of our local waterways, and contribute to preserving the natural environment throughout Tualatin.
The role is performed outdoors and requires a commitment to detail, safety, and continuous learning.
- Perform routine and emergency maintenance, operation, and repair of the City’s sanitary sewer and stormwater systems, including preventative maintenance, response to infrastructure issues, and cleaning lines, manholes, and catch basins.
- Act as Crew Leader when assigned and direct work activities of employees, ensuring satisfactory completion of tasks.
- Operate and pre‑trip inspect vehicles and equipment requiring a CDL, such as combination trucks, backhoes, dump trucks, loaders, and related machinery.
- Operate hand and power tools and equipment for excavation, sediment removal, and other labor tasks.
- Inspect and maintain sewer lift stations, ensuring proper functioning and routine cleaning.
- Apply confined space entry procedures and safely perform work in confined spaces.
- Troubleshoot and repair deficiencies in the sewer and stormwater systems (e.g., catch basin repair, line repair, excavation).
- Follow traffic control procedures, set up traffic zones, and operate traffic safety equipment.
- Use safety equipment and follow hazardous materials handling protocols.
- Correspond with the public to address service requests, provide updates, and handle customer inquiries professionally.
- Proficiently use computer software related to the position (e.g., GIS, asset management systems).
- Respond to emergency events affecting stormwater and sewer systems, including Saturday and 24‑hour on‑call duties.
- Operate snow and ice removal equipment, and assist with sanitary sewer overflow cleanup and reporting protocols.
- Assist in plan review, construction project inspections, and review of design plans or as‑built documents.
- Perform manual labor (digging ditches, cleaning sediment, loading/unloading) and drive to job sites, facilities, vendors, training programs, and meetings as required.
Two years of general maintenance and construction work experience, including operation of heavy equipment, and sufficient education to read and write. Minimum experience for required State Certifications.
Language SkillsAbility to read and interpret safety rules, as‑built documents, blue‑prints, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Computer SkillsProficiency in Microsoft Office, Nex Gen for asset management, laptop or handheld data entry, and the City’s GIS applications.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations- Oregon Commercial Class A Driver’s License with Tanker and Air Brakes Endorsements
- Oregon DEQ Wastewater Collections Operator Certificate II
- First Aid & CPR Certification
Other certifications required within a timeframe determined by management (Confined Space Entry, Traffic Control, Forklift/Lift Truck).
TechnicalSkills and Abilities
- Know and apply safe operating procedures for street, sewer, and storm division equipment.
- Understand confined‑space/hazardous‑condition awareness.
- Knowledge of Clean Water Services maintenance regulations.
- Knowledge of Sanitary Sewer Overflow and Illicit Discharge response procedures.
- Knowledge of winter weather response protocol, including snow plow operation and de‑icer application.
Physical tasks include:
- Continuous lifting of 10 lbs, reaching forward, manipulating fingers and feet.
- Frequent lifting of 10–40 lbs, squatting, kneeling, twisting, reaching overhead, climbing ladders, grasping.
- Occasional lifting of 40–60 lbs, carrying up to 80 lbs, pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs, crawling, digging, balancing, climbing stairs, pinch.
- Rarely lifting 60–80 lbs, laying down.
Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Frequent exposure to loud noise, moisture, dust, fumes, heat/fire, slippery surfaces, vibration, uneven surfaces, poor visibility/low lighting, confined spaces, heights, and chemicals.
