Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Master's degree or its equivalent, representing intensive course work in the principles and practice of educational guidance; educational testing and measurement, counseling, organization and administration of guidance services and the psychology of learning.
  • At least three years of successful teaching experience.
  • A valid Arizona Certificate as a guidance counselor.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO:

Principal and/or Assistant Principal

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

10 months

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist in pre-registration of students; assisting them with course and subject selection.

Monitor student fulfillment of minimum reading and mathematics competency requirements and graduation requirements.

Maintain school records and protect their confidentiality.

Work with students in the solution of problems arising in their classes and peer relationships. Work with students on a personal basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustments.

Assist in the development, administration and interpretation of the school's testing program.

Orient new students to school procedures and the school's various opportunities for learning.

Work to discover and develop special abilities of students.

Provide student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board's policy on student records.

Plan guidance field trips to schools, colleges and industry for interested students. Make recommendations to college for admissions and scholarships.

Obtain and disseminate occupational information to students and to classes studying occupations. Help students evaluate career interests and choices.

Organize and conduct an annual "Career Day".

Work to prevent students from dropping out of school.

Arrange for tutors and summer school work.

Guide students in their participation in school and community activities. Confer with parents whenever necessary.

Interpret the guidance program to the community.

Provide inservice training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board Policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
