Mobility Equipment Technician

The Mobility Equipment Technician is responsible for the installation, service, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of mobility equipment and vehicle modifications designed to assist individuals with disabilities. This position requires strong mechanical and electrical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to performing safe, reliable, and high-quality work.

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below represent the primary duties of the position. Duties may vary based on assignment and business needs.

  • Install, repair, and maintain mobility equipment and vehicle conversion systems, including:
  • Power and manual wheelchair ramps
  • Power transfer seats and swivel seats
  • Wheelchair lifts and tie-down systems
  • Hand controls and foot controls
  • Steering and driving adaptations
  • Kneeling systems
  • Electrical and electronic components
  • Wheelchair and occupant restraint systems
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic problems using appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Read and interpret installation instructions, wiring diagrams, schematics, and manufacturer documentation.
  • Perform vehicle disassembly and reassembly while protecting vehicle components and interior surfaces.
  • Complete installations according to manufacturer specifications and company quality standards.
  • Inspect completed work to verify proper operation, safety, fit, and appearance.
  • Perform road tests when required to verify repairs and equipment operation.
  • Identify additional repairs or safety concerns and communicate findings to the Service Writer or Manager.
  • Accurately document labor, parts used, repairs performed, and diagnostic findings.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Properly use and maintain company tools and equipment.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, OSHA requirements, and manufacturer installation guidelines.
  • Maintain required productivity and quality standards.
  • Assist other technicians when needed and contribute to a positive team environment.
  • Participate in training to remain current on new mobility products, vehicle technology, and installation procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience with automotive electrical systems, vehicle modifications, or adaptive equipment is a plus.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and technical instructions.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to safely operate shop equipment and hand/power tools.
  • Ability to work independently while also working effectively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Automotive, mechanical, electrical, or mobility equipment experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and safety procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and quality standards
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills
Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and work in various positions throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and components weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work underneath vehicles and in confined areas.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, lifts, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to work in a shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, vehicle fluids, and varying temperatures.
