Construction Inspector II (Transportation - Capitol Improvement and Pavement Preservation Projects)
Department:

Job Type: Classified, Grade 12. Salary Range: $27.71 - $38.79 per hour. Hiring Range (estimate): $27.71 - $33.25 per hour. First review of applications on 04/17/2026. OPEN UNTIL FILLED.
Primary Responsibilities- Inspect general contractor and subcontractor work to ensure compliance with project special provisions, plans, standard details, and standard specifications.
- Complete daily inspection reports with documented quantity amounts and photos; upload records to field computer and submit to Pima County.
- Verify compliance of project materials certification prior to placement.
- Supervise consultant inspectors as needed.
- Resolve issues with contractors and, when necessary, elevate larger problems to management.
- Attend weekly project meetings and monitor materials and labor quantities for force account sheets and change orders.
- Review monthly pay estimate quantities and approve for monthly pay estimate by the Project Manager.
- Review and approve traffic control plans (ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor Certification required; certification will be provided if not already held).
- Lead, assign, and train staff; interpret major construction plans and specifications as basis for inspections.
- Inspect concrete structures (bridges, overpasses, box culverts) for proper placement of materials and compliance with county specs.
- Inspect earthwork, drainage, backfill, and embankment operations for compliance.
- Perform sub‑grade and aggregate base course inspection for material stability, road width, and gradation.
- Inspect asphalt paving, chip seal, and related operations for compliance.
- Coordinate with contractors, architects, and departmental sections to meet plan provisions.
- Ensure traffic control and site safety measures are in place.
- Conduct site checks to monitor progress; hold informal pre‑construction meetings with foremen and resolve non‑compliance issues.
- Serve as liaison with contractors, agencies, and private sector; escort visiting inspectors and report outcomes.
- Coordinate with utility companies on acceptable utility locations and inspect installations of utility and drainage pipes.
- Maintain daily records, reports, and pictorial documentation; validate monthly pay estimates and compile post‑construction documentation.
- Three (3) years of experience inspecting construction projects such as sewers, water lines, roadways, bridges, or flood control channels, including at least two (2) years inspecting public works projects.
- Equivalent education and experience may be substituted (accredited college or university). OR two (2) years of experience with Pima County in a Public Works Construction Inspector I, Building Inspector I, or similar level position.
- Qualifications must be documented in the application under "Education" and "Work Experience".
- Minimum three (3) years inspecting large roadway improvement projects, bridge and drainage improvement projects, and ADA access structures.
- Minimum two (2) years experience with federally funded projects.
- ACI Grade 1 Concrete Certification.
- ATTI Soils & Asphalt Certification.
- ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor Certification.
- SWPPP Certification.
- Valid Arizona driver license required at time of application and at time of appointment.
- Completion of a 39‑month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review prior to assignment.
- Background verification of work history, education, and criminal record required.
- May be required to routinely lift or move equipment or other objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Must be able to operate assigned vehicles in all weather conditions and on varying road surfaces.
- Must be able to work in rough terrain, recognize industry‑standard colors used for marking underground utility services/electrical wiring, and properly wear required protective clothing and equipment.
