Environmental Health Technician - Health Department

Overview

The Environmental Health Technician inspects regulated facilities to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, supports vector control through mosquito surveillance, and mitigates public health nuisances. The role combines field inspections, scientific investigation, and community service to protect public health.

• Investigates and inspects food, recreational, and housing establishments within assigned jurisdiction, including convenience markets, swimming pools, hotels, motels, trailer courts, massage studios, bed and breakfast facilities, schools, and warehouses.
• Investigates complaints from citizens and other agencies and referrals to proper resolutions.
• Interprets, promotes, and enforces federal, state, and local mandates and laws regarding public health nuisances.
• Conducts inspections of home daycares and ice cream trucks.
• Investigates vector-related and sanitation-related complaints and recommends appropriate treatment of infested areas.
• Identifies vector breeding sites and prepares, mixes, applies, and disposes of insecticides for control and abatement of mosquito larvae.
• Performs Rapid Analyte Measurement Platform (RAMP) testing in vector samples for virus surveillance and supplies specimens for additional testing.
• Provides educational materials to the public about vector control, in person or via new media.
• Performs operator-level servicing, adjustment, and maintenance of specialized tools, equipment, and assigned vehicles.
• Keeps manual and computer-based records and prepares data for reports as required.

High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED). Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the Education and Work Experience sections of the application. Do not substitute a resume or write "see resume" on the application.

• Associate's degree or higher.
• Experience interning or working in environmental health.
• Bilingual (English, Spanish, Chinese, or other languages).
• Valid Arizona Structural Pest Control License.
• Minimum six (6) months experience with Hedgehog Software or other environmental health software.

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources.

Additional assessments or testing may be required as part of the selection process.

• Licenses and Certificates:
  Valid driver license required at time of application; valid AZ driver license required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review.
• Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the driving record.
• All positions require a valid Pest Control Operator certification in the State of Arizona within one year from the date of appointment. Maintaining a current Pest Control Operator certification is a condition of employment.
