Building Inspector - Development Services

Job Summary

Classification: 5635 – Building Inspector. Salary Grade: 11. Hourly pay range: $27.19 – $38.06 per hour. This position is classified as a Classified job within Development Services.

Pima County Development Services seeks a knowledgeable, customer‑focused Building Inspector to ensure safe, code‑compliant development throughout the community. The inspector will evaluate residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects against approved plans, building codes, county regulations, and industry standards. The role involves close collaboration with contractors, property owners, architects, engineers, and developers to identify deficiencies, provide guidance, and promote timely project completion.

• Conduct field inspections of commercial and residential structures and regulated equipment.
• Review plans, specifications, and related technical materials to determine compliance with permits, codes, and industry standards.
• Schedule and document inspection activities, including issuing approval and correction notices.
• Identify and document defects or deviations; issue rejection or correction notices and perform follow‑up inspections to verify corrections.
• Consult with contractors, property owners, and permit holders on code compliance and resolution of defects.
• Identify discrepancies, potential conflicts, and recommend changes to building codes, laws, statutes, and standards for management.
• Prepare and submit routine, recurring, and special reports to management.
• Operate and service assigned county vehicles at the operator level.
• Maintain activity records in manual and automated systems.

• Five years of experience as a contractor, engineer, architect, building inspector, superintendent, foreman, or mechanic in charge of construction; or
• Three years of experience in a public‑sector building inspection/enforcement setting (Codes Enforcement, Building or Plans Examiner, Public Works Construction Inspector, or related position) plus two current International Codes Council (ICC) certifications as a Residential Inspector or related certification.
• Qualified educational and experiential history documented in application materials.

• ICC Residential Building Inspector (R1) certification or equivalent.
• At least one year of experience performing residential building inspections and applying/interpreting building codes.
• At least one year of experience interpreting residential construction plans, blueprints, and technical specifications.
• At least one year of experience identifying code deficiencies, issuing correction notices, and conducting follow‑up inspections.
• At least one year of experience using permitting, inspection management, or electronic records management software.
• At least one year of experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
• At least one year of experience providing technical guidance and customer service to contractors, homeowners, design professionals, and the public.
• At least one year of experience with residential construction methods, building systems, and applicable zoning or development regulations.

• Valid driver license required at time of application and appointment.
• Subject to a 39‑month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review for suitability to operate county vehicles.
• All positions require ICC inspection‑related certifications before the end of initial or promotional probation.
• Post‑job offer physical and/or drug screening required.
