The job of Special Education Teacher is done for the purpose/s of developing special education students' success in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities, outcomes; addressing students' specific needs; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

TASKS- Adapts classroom work for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce classroom objectives.
- Administers first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g. tube feeding, toileting, diapering, etc.).
- Advises parents/guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher's expectations, developing methods for improvement, and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
- Assesses students' social, academic, and behavioral needs to evaluate students and family requirements, placement and success of the program.
- Collaborates with school personnel, parents and community agencies to improve student outcomes.
- Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides.
- Instructs students to improve success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
- Manages student behavior for a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Prepares teaching materials and related reports (grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.).
- Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse) to maintain personal safety and adherence to policies.
- Participates in meetings to convey or gather required information.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of algebra/geometry, relevant manuals, school system, child development stages.
- Skills:
analytical, assessment instruments, record keeping, communication skills. - Abilities: scheduling activities, data analysis, equipment use, problem-solving, teamwork.
- Works under limited supervision using standardized practices.
- Leads, guides, and coordinates others.
- Operates within a defined budget.
- Indoor environment; frequent sitting, standing, bending, repetitive motion.
- Vision to monitor; lifting up to 15 lbs; ability to physically restrain children if necessary.
- Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing; fine finger dexterity.
- Estimated: 5% sitting, 20% walking, 75% standing.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area.
- Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate in Special Education.
- Required endorsements for certain positions.
- Valid driver’s license and dependable transportation.
- Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
