Under the Education Director for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s Education Division, the incumbent will engage in a year-long immersion and practicum on the teaching and learning of Yaqui language, culture and history. Teachers will be responsible for mastering the basic principles of linguistics, which will inform their primary duty of becoming certified Yaqui Language Instructors who will assist in the development of companion curricula for PreK-3 students toward the larger goal of Yaqui language revitalization.

Teachers will also be responsible for mastering the principles of Project Based Learning and design project-based learning modules that apply their ongoing learning in Yaqui language, culture, and history to pre-determined curricula and thematic units. Teachers will work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, to allow for authentic immersion opportunities to address domains of learning outside of the workplace. Teachers are contracted employees who will operate on a year-long academic calendar and will not be permitted vacation outside of designated windows of time as assigned by the project.

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to the designated work schedule 90% of the time with the only exceptions being documented illness or death of immediate family;
  • Collaborate with TLI participants, trainers, and lead teacher in the development and design of a Yaqui Language Curriculum in alignment with partner curricula;
  • Travel as required with the institute to national and international locations;
  • Attend TLI sessions/activities periodically scheduled in evenings and weekends;
  • Complete all TLI assignments and projects as assigned;
  • Commit to the Yaqui Language Immersion component of the TLI;
  • Successfully complete weekly lessons, assignments, and quizzes toward the overall goal of becoming a certificated Yaqui Language Instructor;
  • Develop Project Based Learning modules for students in PK-3rd grade;
  • Participate in comprehensive training in best practices and instructional philosophies that guide teaching toward revitalizing the Yaqui Language through highly effective and engaging student learning environments;
  • Demonstrate an understanding and application of culturally responsive learning, which can be seen in work products related to curriculum and instructional methodologies, project-based learning, language nest philosophy, and the art of linguistics toward language revitalization;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Department;
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by the supervisor or director.
Knowledge of
  • Interweaving Yaqui and Tribal knowledge and understandings into curriculum and lessons;
  • 21st-century schools, including the ability to make proficient use of the Microsoft suite and other technology, online platforms and tools;
  • DHHS/Head Start/Arizona Department of Education academic standards and benchmarks (3-year-old through 3rd grade);
  • Teaching strategies for diverse learners;
  • Child growth and development;
  • Early childhood and elementary education methods and practices;
  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, rules, and regulations;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.
