Position: Child Development Parent Educator - 26/27 SY

Overview

DEFINITION:
Responsible for delivering the Parents as Teachers model of parent engagement using a home visitation strategy. Must adhere to the Parents as Teachers Quality Endorsement and First Things First Standards of Practice for home visitation.

Essential Functions

  • Provide home visits to 20-23 families bimonthly.
  • Complete lesson plans before visit and follow up observation report for children birth to five and prenatal plans within two days of visit.
  • Conduct developmental screenings of newly enrolled children within 90 days of enrollment.
  • Administer family assessments within 90 days of first personal visit.
  • Serve as a referral source for families and provide community resources as needed.
  • Recruit and enroll new families.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Plan and implement Group Connections.
  • Plan and implement library/story hour.
  • Attend biweekly staff meetings.
  • Assist parents with goal setting and writing of goals.
  • Complete hearing and vision screenings.
  • Complete professional trainings as required by Parents as Teachers Quality Standards and First Things First Standards of Practice guidelines.
Curriculum And Standards Of Practice Requirements
  • Complete required trainings:
    • Foundation and Model Implementation, for families beginning prenatally until their child completes kindergarten to be certified
    • Foundation 2 for families with children 3 years through kindergarten
    • Ages and Stages Questionnaire and Ages and Stages Social Emotional Questionnaire
  • Write an individual family plan for each family on caseload.
  • Administer Life Skills Progression (LSP) with parents.
  • Administer Depression and Intimate Partner Violence screeners.
  • Administer Ages and Stages Questionnaire and Ages and Stages Social Emotional Questionnaire, score and write summary report.
  • Utilize Parents as Teachers database system to enter Personal Visit Record, screening results, Screening Summary report.
Caseload Requirements
  • Visit 20-23 families once or twice a month.
  • Provide lesson plans for parents prenatally and children (birth until kindergarten completion).
  • Provide home visits in late afternoon, early evenings and Saturdays, if requested by family.
  • Write lesson plan and lead evening programs for fathers.
Technology
  • Input into SUSD PAT database all family, home visit and screening data.
  • Use PAT online curriculum to access all lesson plans, parent handouts and educator resources.
  • Assist parents on using computer and smartphones to build language and literacy skills of children during home visits and library/story hour, if virtual delivery.
  • Assist parents in completing electronic surveys.
  • Use PAT required database system to write lesson plans and observation reports.
Knowledge, Skills And Other Characteristics

Knowledge of District policies and procedures. Knowledge of research information from Parents as Teachers National Center (PAT). Knowledge of curriculum used to educate parents, students and staff. Knowledge of early childhood development. Knowledge of community resources. Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity. Skill in providing child care development. Skill in working with special needs children and adults. Skill in handling difficult situations with parents or guardians.

Skill in the use of a personal computer. Skill in following oral and written instructions. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and team building. Ability to be self-directed when necessary and have flexibility with the families and scheduling.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments. Work requires frequent driving, sitting, standing, bending, and may require some lifting. May be exposed to agitated or aggressive students or parents/guardians.

Qualifications
  • Associates degree and two years of college classes in early childhood education.
  • Experience working with families and children five years and younger in the classroom or at home.
  • Knowledge of early childhood development.
  • Must be able to read and write Spanish.
  • Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Must possess an Arizona driver license.
  • Additional certifications are also be required after hire as follows:
    Depending on the needs of the District, some incumbents in this class must be able to demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English as a condition of employment.
Salary

Salary Grade: G Hourly Pay: $19.00 Hours per Day: 8 Days in
