Position Overview
The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs within the College of Medicine – Tucson (COM‑T) will provide and/or coordinate student support services focused on academic and career advising that enhance academic and career success. Responsibilities include student advisement, academic progress review, and development and implementation of a career plan for each advisee. The case load is approximately 160 students, one or more medical school class per year.
This position is 0.30 FTE in the deanship role, and is expected to combine with one or more of the tripartite mission areas to a 1.0 FTE. The successful candidate will also fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in an appropriate department, actively participate in teaching, clinical service and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (NTE/TE/T).

Responsibilities- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Student Affairs, Financial Aid, Student Records, Student Success, Curricular Affairs, the Vice Dean of Education, the Dean of Medicine, and College of Medicine faculty and staff to facilitate advisement and academic progress review.
- Serve as Society House Dean and liaison to Society Mentors in that House; monitor student performance and academic progress of all advisees.
- Meet with all advisees at least four times per year to review academic progress, career goals, student opportunities, and extracurricular balance.
- Identify advisees who may require special support and refer to appropriate resources (e.g., DRC, mental health team, peer mentoring).
- Participate in annual medical student Orientation week, Intersession weeks, and affiliated events such as the White Coat Ceremony, GHHS/AOA/Aequetas dinner, MATCH day, wellness week, house championships, fundraisers, and convocation.
- Serve as a mentor/advisor for Career Development and Student Opportunities; maintain updated knowledge of career choice trends and opportunities.
- Meet with advisees after Step 1 and Step 2 to reassess career goals and discuss parallel plans.
- Review year‑3 schedules with advisees, Society Mentors, and Specialty Advisors; provide advice when needed.
- Help advisees select and connect with a Specialty Advisor; communicate with Specialty Advisors to resolve issues.
- Assist T2R advisees with residency application processes (CVs, Personal Statements, application materials, VSLO, ERAS) and track interview outcomes.
- Review and revise MSPE characteristics; compile and review MSPEs for final submission and co‑signature.
- Prepare for and guide advisees through the SOAP process; stay updated on changes to ERAS, RCAS, SF MATCH, Urology MATCH, Military MATCH, NRMP, and SOAP processes.
- Experience managing difficult conversations.

- Current faculty member at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
- MD/DO degree from an accredited institution and eligibility for a University of Arizona academic appointment.
- Board certified by the American Board of Medical Sub‑specialties and eligible for an unrestricted medical license in the State of Arizona.
- Eligible for clinical privileges at Banner‑UMC Tucson.
- Currently working clinically 0.1 FTE or higher at Banner.
- Experience with UA systems, processes, and procedures.
- Experience with UA College of Medicine‑Tucson policy.
- Documented success as a physician educator with experience in academic and/or career advising of medical students.
