Position: Instructional Faculty - Archaeology/Anthropology (1- year Provisional)

Position

Summary

This position will be in person, located in the Pima County/Tucson area, for the 2026-27 academic year on a 1-year provisional contract. Faculty will teach and work a set schedule over a nine-month academic year, August–May, which may include day, evening, and weekend duties.

About the Division

The Humanities and Social Sciences division serves as the core foundation for General Education, critical thinking, and global awareness across the college. It offers courses in anthropology, history, psychology, sociology, political science, philosophy, ethnic studies, and gender studies. Students typically pursue an Associate of Arts (Liberal Arts) degree and may obtain certificates in Field Archaeology and Social Services. The division includes experiential learning opportunities such as the Archaeology Center, Study Abroad programs, a public Vote Center, and the Aztec Resource Center Food Pantry.

About

the Archaeology Field Training Program and the Archaeology Center

Pima Community College’s Field Archaeology training program has been a key resource in southern Arizona for five decades. The program is open-access and affordable, providing an entry point for underrepresented students. The Field Training program is based in the Archaeology Center, which supports classes with full and part‑time staff, equipment, software, and student tutoring.

About the Position

The faculty member will primarily teach hands‑on classes in archaeological methods that are part of the Field Archaeology Certificate Program. This includes field and laboratory classes in archaeological survey, excavation, artifact analysis, GPS use, and archaeological mapping. The faculty member may also teach lecture, hybrid, or online courses in archaeology or related subfields of anthropology and will serve as Principal Investigator for archaeological projects undertaken by the field classes and/or the Archaeology Center.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teach an equivalent of 15 load hours per semester.
  • Facilitate learning and help students achieve academic success and retention.
  • Evaluate and assess student performance.
  • Provide academic advising.
  • Monitor and continuously improve instruction to ensure Student Learning Outcomes are met at the classroom, discipline/program, and College level.
  • Evaluate and revise course outlines and course materials.
  • Maintain competency and currency in the teaching fields.
  • Engage in professional development in current and emerging instructional approaches.
  • Serve actively as a member of the department and discipline groups.
  • Participate in fostering partnerships that strengthen educational opportunities in response to community needs.
  • Represent the department and/or campus on college‑wide committees.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students, and utilize a collegial style in all forms of communication.
Job Requirements / Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in the field of study, or
  • Master’s degree in any discipline and a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the field of study.

Fields of study (disciplines/subfields) include Anthropology, archaeology, and other closely related fields.

The Selected Candidate Will
  • Have a specialization in Archaeology.
  • Be qualified as a Principal Investigator in Arizona, or if not, provide documentation of how they meet each criterion listed in the Arizona State Museum Principal Investigator Qualifications policy.
  • Demonstrate experience working with staff on projects requiring a cooperative team‑oriented effort.
  • Have professional experience in archaeology outside of teaching, including supervision in a field or laboratory setting.
