Position Highlights

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Arizona seeks highly qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Instructor. The primary role of the Instructor is to create an engaging and meaningful learning experience for students in courses at the level of calculus and below. We are looking for individuals who are dedicated to providing quality mathematics instruction, and who will bring enthusiasm and expertise to this endeavor.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to work with other instructors to contribute to, and to be part of, an innovative teaching and learning environment. We are able to offer varied FTE depending on the needs of our program and the incumbent. All positions are in-person at the University of Arizona main campus in Tucson. This is an appointment for the  academic year.

However, the Department of Mathematics may provide opportunities for reappointment based on performance, department needs, and funding.

This is a non-tenure track teaching appointment. The rate of pay for this position is $45,000 annually and will be prorated by a semester and an FTE between .50 – 1.00.

The Department of Mathematics is the campus home for the Mathematical Sciences; the place where members of our community create, communicate, and apply mathematics of the highest caliber. The Mathematics Graduate Program offers dynamic, advanced areas of study leading to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Mathematics, preparing students for impactful careers in academia, industry, and beyond. Students in this program research various fields of Mathematics, including Algebra, Analysis, Applied Math, Geometry, Math Education, Probability, and Statistics.

The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to creating and maintaining high quality, expansive programs that allow us to give back to not only the mathematics community, but the quality of life within the university, Tucson community, and beyond.

• The primary responsibility is to teach in-person courses at the level of first-semester calculus and below, as needed by the department. For this academic year, the work will be focused on Math 100, which is a preparatory class for college-level math, and Math 391, which is a training course for undergraduate learning assistants.
• Supervise undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants working with Math 100.
• Instructors are also expected to participate in various departmental activities, such as tutoring and mentoring programs. Full-time appointments usually require teaching 12 credit hours each semester.
• Additional responsibilities include attendance at all appropriate course meetings and related professional development sessions.

• Master’s degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or statistics, or a Master’s degree in another field and 18 units of graduate credit in mathematics, mathematics education, or statistics.
• Significant experience teaching mathematics in a university or college setting at the level of first-semester calculus and below.
• Experience working with students with a variety of math backgrounds.
• Experience working with and supervising undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants.

• Experience suited to teach the full range of 100-level math courses, including introductory statistics.
• Experience teaching at the University of Arizona.
• Experience working with University of Arizona practices and policies.
• Experience teaching and/or designing online courses.
