Research Technician III, Biomedical Engineering
The Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Research Technician III to support the development and testing of firmware for wearable devices. This role performs moderately complex tasks under general supervision, including writing, updating, and debugging embedded firmware, executing standard test plans, and validating device performance using established engineering principles and laboratory tools. The position requires close collaboration with internal lab teams and external sponsor engineers, providing routine status updates, test results, and technical clarification.
This is a temporary, less than 6-month position.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Independently develops and maintains code for complex research hardware and equipment.
- Set up and perform routine tests to validate device performance; record and organize data.
- Adapt existing firmware libraries to fit specific experiment requirements.
- Execute detailed test plans to ensure devices meet sponsor requirements before delivery.
- Independently works on the preparation of technical summaries and documentation for sponsors under minimal supervision.
- Maintain inventory of lab supplies and development kits.
- Document code changes and testing procedures clearly for future reference.
- Develop and update standard firmware for wearable devices to read sensors (e.g., heart rate, motion) and store data.
- Communicate routine progress and technical details to sponsor engineers via email or status calls.
- Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot hardware and software issues.
- Debug complex hardware/firmware issues using standard tools (multimeters, debuggers).
- Implement established wireless protocols (like Bluetooth) to connect wearables to phones or computers.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of embedded systems, microcontrollers, and standard coding practices.
- Skill in writing, modifying, and debugging firmware code and operating standard laboratory testing equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science (or equivalent technical experience).
- 3 months or more relevant experience in firmware design, coding, or electronics testing (internship or capstone project experience is acceptable).
