Sr. Mechanical Engineer – ALE – Strategic Strike

Location:

Tucson, AZ, United States. This onsite role is part of Raytheon’s Air Launched Effectors Department, supporting the design and production of Air Launched Effectors products and subsystems for U.S. Government and international customers.

What You Will Do
  • Own and execute technical tasks, serving as a prime technical contact for complex problems related to design, manufacture, integration, and production sustainment of mechanical sub‑systems across the engineering lab and factory floor at Raytheon Technologies and suppliers.
  • Communicate with cross‑disciplined engineering team members and suppliers to analyze, model, and document the design technical data package (TDP) and ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance within the mechanical discipline.
  • Work autonomously with limited supervision, acting as the responsible engineer for major hardware subsystems and leading small teams of junior engineers.
  • Perform mechanical design, development, and documentation of components, sub‑assemblies, and major end items for defense system equipment in accordance with system requirements.
  • Collaborate with Raytheon factories and suppliers on new product integration and manufacturing process improvements.
  • Conduct and review tolerance analyses to ensure form, fit, and function meet design intent.
  • Improve new and existing designs using Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) and Design for Producibility principles.
  • Apply knowledge and experience in technical problem solving and hardware development in a fast‑paced, team environment.
  • Support production of mechanical sub‑systems at internal factories and suppliers, including first hardware builds and first‑article inspections.
  • Review manufacturing process instructions and support material review board dispositions.
  • Perform root‑cause investigations on production‑related hardware issues.
Qualifications
  • A university degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with at least 3 years of experience.
  • Experience in mechanical design and design documentation.
  • Experience in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5.
  • Experience with CREO (Pro/Engineer) or similar 3‑D solid modeling software.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) is preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude to solve moderate‑scope technical problems.
  • Leadership experience with small teams (4–6 people).
  • Supplier interaction and supplier‑management experience.
  • Ability to work independently or in teams, flexible, and proactive.
  • Experience in mechanical subsystem packaging, materials, thermal, structural analysis, energetics principals, control systems, interconnect, airframe, or large‑assembly development.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience with PTC Windchill Product Data Management or equivalent configuration/data‑management software.
  • Ability to travel to government and supplier facilities as required.
