Plant Engineer

Location:

Tucson, AZ (AMG) - ASU

Job Overview

Assist the plant manager in the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Air Separation production plant while maintaining safety standards, plant production, operating efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities Technical Support and Resolution
  • Partner with the plant manager in the investigation of technical and operational issues.
  • Engineer and foster efficient solutions for correction and prevention of recurrence.
  • Provide equipment component repair specifications to improve safety, production efficiency and reliability.
  • Observe performance and engineer solutions for improved outcomes.
Documentation and Process Improvement
  • Create, update and review PHA’s, P&’s, MOC’s and SOP’s for continuous improvement of overall plant operation and efficiency.
  • Create, review and contribute to job plans in SAP Maintenance module.
  • Collaborate with the Plant Manager in SAP transactions (POR, PO’s, daily reporting, etc.).
Project Management
  • Coordinate and guide minor projects (upgrades, retrofits, plant improvements and expansions).
  • Support project execution with the Plant Manager to align outcomes with goals, timelines and budgets.
  • Develop designs, cost estimates and economic insights to facilitate decision making.
  • Generate Capital Appropriation Request (CAR) requests and follow‑up on approval.
  • Train operations team on MOC’s and process optimization.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Safety
  • Cultivate and advance safe work behaviors through policies and procedures.
  • Assist with safety incident investigations, including near misses, using root cause analysis.
  • Ensure applicable regulatory standards (OSHA, EPA, FDA, DHS) are met and training/recordkeeping performed.
  • Support and participate in Airgas HSEQ & RM programs and objectives.
Qualifications
  • BS in Engineering or related field, or equivalent education/experience.
  • 2 years of process engineering experience.
  • Preferred: experience in industrial and/or specialty gas business.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of cryogenic plants, oxygen systems, compressors, instrumentation and controls.
  • Advanced analytical and problem‑resolution skills.
  • Ability to define, design, specify, control costs and implement projects.
  • Customer‑service orientation.
  • Experience with advanced computer models.
  • PLC programming experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, SAP, MS Project, Google software.
  • Process simulation software (ASPEN, HYSYS) a plus.
  • Reading, analyzing and interpreting regulations, technical procedures.
  • Writing routine business reports and correspondence in English.
  • Effective presentation and communication skills.
  • Practical problem solving with limited standardization.
  • Knowledge of process safety management practices.
  • Understanding of industrial gases industry, products and customers.
Physical Demands
  • May be required to remain stationary for extended periods.
  • Occasionally may traverse offices or manufacturing locations.
  • Must actively listen and exchange information.
  • Must observe and assess information via computer.
  • Requires use of computer, telephone and operation of a motor vehicle.
