Position: Consultant (Seasonal) Rubin Telescope Engineer

Consultant (Seasonal) Rubin Telescope Engineer

A Draft of the LSST/Rubin TMA Construction Closeout Report is already in progress. This position will be the principal individual responsible for successful delivery of this major telescope subsystem.

The Telescope Mount Construction Report Developer will be responsible for:

  • Assisting the Rubin Systems Engineering team in managing and processing information regarding the recently completed construction of the TMA and its major subsystems:
    Requirements, Risks, Hazards, and FRACAS (failure mode issues) that occurred during the process of design and construction.
  • Developing descriptive content regarding historical aspects of the construction activities, and the particulars of each subsystem related to the TMA.
  • Assist in drafting the text for the TMA Report as well as reviewing and editing for accuracy the sections prepared by others - focusing in particular on the areas most relevant to the Report Developer’s technical knowledge and expertise.
  • Utilize reference materials furnished by the Systems Engineering team to help in the overall organization of the Report and to support its writing.
  • Provide relevant notes in an appropriate level of detail for each section marked in yellow in the Table of Contents for the Report (attached)
  • Provide information gleaned from TMA contract management and broad support of the vendor final design, fabrication, factory assembly and test, summit delivery, and final acceptance testing.
  • All AURA employees are responsible for the proper management and control of all AURA property within their work area, whether assigned to them or someone else. This responsibility includes reporting any known missing, stolen, or non-working property in their work area to their supervisor or the AURA Property Officer.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with government award terms and conditions assigned to this position or subordinates of this position as defined in the Vela Award Management system, (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)..

Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the design and construction of large precision opto-mechanical systems, with strong preference to ground based telescope systems.
  • Demonstrated writing skills, ability to coordinate and work with others in development of technical reporting documents.
  • Experience and proficient in use of office/writing tools – MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Ability and willingness to meet with the SE and Construction teams, remotely or in person – principally in Tucson, and to participate substantially in the process of completing the TMA Report.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  • The optimal resource is the subject matter expert (SME) who managed the design and construction process for the TMA.
  • Knowledge of telescope observatory operations, maintenance, and safety procedures beneficial.
  • Proficient knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Ability to cooperate and coordinate with others at all levels in completing responsibilities.

  • May occasionally need to position self to maintain computer and related tools.
  • Seldomly needed to move objects up to 10 pounds.
  • Constant communication with other individuals. Must be able to discern and exchange information as appropriate to the situation.

Salary Range: $158,000-$174,000. The final salary will depend on skills, qualifications and experience.
