OverviewThe Advanced Airframes Department is hiring a Principal Mechanical Engineer located in Tucson, Arizona. Responsibilities include design, integration, and test of mechanical‑focused hardware using CAD, mechanical analyses, and coordination across engineering teams to ensure successful hardware performance, typically demonstrated through flight tests. The role may lead small teams and focus on updating existing designs for future production.
What You Will Do- Perform mechanical design, development, and documentation of components, sub‑assemblies, and major end items for defense system equipment according to system requirements.
- Collaborate across multiple engineering groups (Structural, Thermal Analysis, Materials Engineering, Quality, Safety, Supply Chain).
- Lead a team with limited supervision and meet commitments for schedule, financial, and technical goals.
- Support suppliers with product integration.
- Provide support for thermal, structural, and dynamic analysis, incorporating results into mechanical design.
- Perform and review tolerance analyses to ensure form, fit, and function meet design intent.
- Improve new and existing designs using DFMA and design for producibility principles.
- Apply technical problem‑solving and hardware development in a fast‑paced team environment.
- Degree in STEM and minimum 8 years of relevant experience or advanced degree plus 5 years of experience.
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and basic tolerance analysis and drawing interpretation.
- Experience with CAD design tools.
- Experience overseeing suppliers in fabrication or production of mechanical hardware.
- Experience with airframe development, electronics packaging, or mechanisms for missiles or similar engineering applications.
- Salary range: $107,500 – $204,500 USD.
