Job Summary

The Electrical Engineering (EE) Section of the Materials and Process Engineering Department at RTX is seeking a Senior Principal Electronic Materials Failure Analysis Engineer. The role supports the EE section in performing electronic materials failure analysis and component evaluation for a range of devices, including passive devices, microcircuits, cables, connectors, magnetics, and electro‑magnetics.

Responsibilities

The engineer will:

  • Analyze electronic components with knowledge of materials such as ceramics and glasses, metal wire bonding, component staking, conformal coating, and solder.
  • Perform each step of an analysis: initial evaluation, photo‑documentation, electrical testing, destructive testing, and draft a final report that substantiates failure conclusions.
  • Determine root causes of failures using laboratory equipment, including digital photo‑documentation, electrical component test equipment, Sonar‑scan, SEM‑EDS, and various destructive techniques.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of related experience, or 7 years with an advanced degree in a related field. A university degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Proven experience in electronic component failure analysis.
  • Experience analyzing microcircuits, active or passive electrical components.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Materials Science.
  • Knowledge of Government Component Documents (MIL‑STD, MIL‑PRF, and MIL‑HDBK specifications) and associated QPLs, QMLs.
  • Experience testing RF devices and interconnects.
  • Strong data collection and presentation skills; ability to write a clear report and present findings.
  • Proficiency with electrical test equipment (DMM, Curve Tracer, Parametric Analyzers, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Familiarity with component datasheets, drawings, and electrical schematics.
  • Advanced degree in related disciplines or ABET accreditation preferred.
