Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department seeks a talented person to serve as Laboratory Supervisor in the Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Office (CRAO) Laboratory team.

Pay Range: $62,337 - $87,276 annually.
- Maintain current knowledge of laws, regulations, and legislation governing regulatory bodies such as OSHA, U.S. EPA, and ADHS to ensure compliance.
- Supervise, coordinate, and participate in laboratory work; oversee training and methodology for one of the four laboratory units.
- Review and approve raw data and data entered into spreadsheets and automated information management systems for final reporting.
- Develop new methodologies and refine existing methods used for testing complex sample matrices.
- Perform specialized tests on wastewater for compliance permits or process control for Pima County departments and public agencies.
- Evaluate advanced instrumentation, submit quotes for equipment, chemicals, and supplies for budgetary purposes.
- Assess chemicals for licensed use and evaluate new chemicals for hazardous waste implications to reduce hazardous waste production.
- Ensure Quality Assurance/Quality Control of laboratory testing per approved method, standard, and laboratory’s Quality Assurance Plan.
- Maintain physical facilities and conduct preventative maintenance programs on analytical equipment.
- Direct others in resolving testing, analyses, and operational problems; conduct corrective action investigations and reports.
- Evaluate employee performance, recommend hiring and terminations, and initiate progressive discipline as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the overall goals and functions of RWRD and the CRAO Laboratory.
- Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, microbiology, biology, environmental science, or related field with at least four years of specialized professional laboratory experience analyzing wastewater, including one year in an environmental laboratory (or equivalent experience).
- Two years of experience with Pima County as a Laboratory Chemist or Laboratory Coordinator.
- Valid Arizona driver license required at time of appointment.
- Valid DOT motor vehicle record subject to review.
- Experience performing pesticide, volatile and semi‑volatile organics, and herbicide analyses for compliance permits on water or wastewater matrices per Clean Water Act, AZPDES and APP permits.
- Knowledge of quality control requirements for EPA methods 524/624.1/8260, 525/608/625.1/8270 and experience reviewing data from other analysts for these methods.
- Minimum one year supervisory experience.
- Recent experience operating a Gas Chromatograph (GC) and a Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GC‑MS).
- Experience performing organic extractions (liquid‑liquid and solid phase).
- Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Distinguish color within normal range and wear safety clothing and equipment.
- Lift and carry up to fifty pounds; push or pull objects weighing up to one hundred pounds.
- Perform actions such as climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching, squatting, and stooping; grasping; hearing in noisy areas; speaking in person and on the phone; vision to distinguish colors, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
Primarily works in a climate‑controlled laboratory building; may travel to other facilities occasionally. Exposure to strong odors, hazardous chemicals, compounds, and wastewater products.
