Design Engineer I – Hydraulic Valves & Mechanisms
Sargent Aerospace & Defense is a global supplier of custom‑engineered products to the aerospace and defense industries.
Purpose & ScopeThe Design Engineer will report to the Engineering Manager and collaborate with peers across key business units to provide robust and timely solutions to customers’ design challenges.
Roles & Responsibilities- Ensure safety is the foundation of daily work through vigilance and accountability.
- Perform engineering analysis (stress, FEA, fatigue) and apply problem‑solving methods to support new product development and/or sustaining production of existing designs.
- Create new designs that conform to customer requirements and properly apply engineering principles.
- Apply, evaluate, and optimize Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to facilitate inspection and manufacturing.
- Write test plans and reports to demonstrate compliance with customer specifications.
- Interact with customers to clarify design intent and technical requirements.
- Maintain accurate, orderly project records, including design and test data, customer specifications, and directives.
- Direct designers and drafters in design concepts and optimization to meet strict deadlines.
- Provide engineering assistance on development and qualification test programs.
- Assist on the Material Review Board (MRB) to facilitate disposition of non‑conforming products.
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) using ANSYS.
- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Working knowledge of 3D modeling software (Pro/Engineer or CREO).
- Excellent writing, presentation, communication, and organizational skills.
- Strong MS Office skills.
- Familiarity with Mathcad, MATLAB, and/or LabVIEW.
- Self‑starter who demonstrates a sense of urgency in meeting customer expectations and delivering results.
- Ability to investigate, diagnose, and resolve complex technical problems and communicate in clear, simple terms.
- Attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of this position.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Experience directly related to hydraulic and/or electromechanical component design and/or manufacture & test (servos, actuators, control valves, manifolds, etc.).
- Familiarity with electronic and/or hydraulic control system design.
- Prior ANSYS and CREO experience.
- Solid mechanics background.
- Experience using MATLAB, Simulink or similar coding.
- Exposure to common machining practices and/or metal forming methods & processes.
- Familiarity with fatigue analysis, fastener analysis, and material & process control.
- Hands‑on mechanical or electrical aptitude displayed through personal hobbies/projects.
- Familiarity with DMAIC (or equivalent) problem‑solving methodology.
Due to ITAR regulations, this position requires that the employee must be a U.S. citizen.
Quality RequirementEmployees will participate in understanding, implementing, and maintaining the Company Quality Policy in accordance with AS‑9100 and/or ISO‑9001 requirements.
Physical Requirements / Working ConditionsThe employee will be required to move throughout the building to collect, handle, and process production parts.
