At Arete we’re seeking a Systems Engineer who will support various science and engineering efforts for a range of underwater acoustic sensor systems. These efforts include system design, analysis, modeling, development, fabrication, assembly, testing, qualification, and planning required for the successful demonstration of production‑level systems, as well as research and development of new systems.
Responsibilities- Design underwater active and passive acoustic technologies for new systems, including array design, sonar signal processing, beamforming, acoustic communications, and automated detection and classification.
- Support design, modeling, fabrication, and testing of underwater transducers and sonar imaging systems.
- Perform simulation and analysis for environmental interactions with acoustic signals.
- Support the design and testing of algorithms for sound localization, target detection and classification.
- Prepare, participate, and present in technical briefings in accordance with IEEE 15288.2 such as SRR, PDR, and CDR to internal and external customers, and write/support technical and cost proposals.
- Conduct requirements derivation, requirements traceability, systems integration & test, performance verification, and data analysis for sonar sensor systems.
- Play an active role in troubleshooting sonar‑related system‑level failures among a diverse team of engineers and technicians.

- Master’s or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Acoustics, Applied Math, Applied Physics, or related field with 2+ years of experience.
- Hands‑on acoustic testing experience.
- Deep understanding of fundamental acoustics, piezoelectric materials, and acoustic transducer design including lumped element modeling.
- Programming experience in MATLAB, Python, C++, or other.
- Capacity to work in a team with minimal supervision and agility to work multiple potentially disparate projects simultaneously.
- Desire to learn.
- Proven capability to develop creative solutions to complex technical problems.
- Ability to communicate clearly both written and verbally.
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a security clearance.
- Active secret or higher security clearance.
- Experience in DoD volume and/or side‑scan sonar system design, development, test, and production.
- Experience in DoD UUV system design, development, test, and production.
Salary range: $100,000 to $125,000; compensation may be influenced by experience, education, and key skills.
