Overview

Position: Senior/Lead VFX Artist

Location: Remote

This is a startup opportunity seeking a founder-level contributor. It is initially unpaid with potential for equity and/or profit sharing depending on investment/funding and project needs.

Mission

We’re developing an exciting new fantasy/sci-fi IP and genre-defying game, blending fast-paced multiplayer action/combat with familiar MMORPG mechanics. Our broader mission is to push genre boundaries, create immersive experiences, and share success with our developers while maintaining work/life balance.

Job Description

We are seeking a talented Senior or Lead VFX Artist to join our team and shape the visual effects of our game. As the Lead or Senior VFX Artist, you will oversee and execute a wide range of visual effects that bring combat and magical environments to life.

Responsibilities
  • Mentor or lead and manage the VFX team, providing direction, guidance, and feedback.
  • Collaborate with the Art Director and other leads to ensure high-quality, consistent VFX.
  • Create and implement VFX assets for spell casting, including magical explosions, fire, smoke, and other mystical effects.
  • Work with shaders and materials to achieve desired effects.
  • Optimize VFX assets for performance while maintaining artistic integrity.
  • Contribute to visual style guides and ensure VFX adhere to them.
  • Contribute ideas and solutions to artistic challenges and stay updated on industry trends.
Requirements
  • Extensive experience in VFX production for games, including particle systems, fluid simulations, and dynamic effects.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard VFX software (e.g., Houdini, Embergen or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of P  workflows and material creation.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Solid understanding of game development pipelines and workflows.
  • Portfolio showcasing a diverse range of VFX skills and styles.
Bonus Qualifications
  • Solid understanding of Unreal Engine 5.
  • Passion for games and fantasy/sci-fi genres.
  • Previous experience in VFX and/or artistic leadership roles.
  • Knowledge of technical art techniques for optimizing VFX assets.
  • Previous experience working on large-scale projects.
