Formed in 1928–29 as the first professional symphony orchestra in the Southwest, the TSO is the longest continuously performing professional arts organization in Arizona. The mission of the organization is to build and enrich community through the experience of live music of the highest quality. It serves more than 120,000 lives each year, including 35,000 students, through concerts, educational programming and outreach.
Under the artistic leadership of Music Director José Luis Gomez since 2016, the TSO’s vision is to reflect its many communities and bring them together through music, creating deeper connections with the region’s heritage. and making music for all Tucson and southern Arizona. The TSO will celebrate its 100 th anniversary in the 2028–29 season.
The OpportunityThe Vice President of Finance is responsible for the business and financial operations of the organization, including financial planning, day-to-day accounting, controls, and reporting. This includes budgeting, cash flow management, monthly financial statements, analysis, long-range financial projections, annual audit, and banking relations. The VP also oversees the administration of payroll, employee benefits, and personnel policies, and is involved with decisions on IT management and facilities operations.
The position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and works closely with the Board of Trustees’ Treasurer and its Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees.
- Responsible for all financial planning, budgeting, analyses, forecasting and cash management.
- Leads monthly Finance Committee meetings, which includes preparing and distributing all management and financial reports in advance and providing explanations of variances.
- Supports the Investment Committee with reporting of the TSO Endowment and other institutional investments.
- Develops monthly and ad hoc dashboards and management reports to support decision-making.
- Provides financial analysis and support during negotiations of the musicians’ Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Prepares monthly accrual financial reports in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), including balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows.
- Develops and maintains a documented system of fiscal policies and procedures; implements and monitors a system of internal controls. Ensures all financial functions are in accordance with GAAP, and any applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
- Ensures compliance with all required financial reporting to government funding agencies, financial partners, foundations, and other funders is accurate and submitted in a timely manner; reviews grant contracts for financial, legal, and other compliance requirements.
- Reconciles bank statements and other accounts accurately on a monthly basis.
- Oversees preparation and maintenance of property, equipment and instrument inventory records, and establishes depreciation and lease schedules.
- Prepares all schedules requested by audit firm for financial statement audit and IRS form 990 prep.
- Supervises the Payroll and Benefits Administrator and oversees the processing of payroll for approximately 250 employees.
- Ensures compliance with laws and regulations regarding the maintenance of employee records and policies (both staff and orchestra).
- Oversees the execution of all benefits programs, including retirement programs and health insurance.
- Liaises with CEO and HR consultant to address any employee issues or HR compliance concerns.
- Assigned as Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Officer and ensures compliance of non-harassment/non-discrimination policy with assistance from HR consultant.
- Works with administrative staff to negotiate contracts and prepare operating and capital budgets for administrative functions including IT and facilities for the Tucson Symphony Center.
- Oversees IT and cybersecurity for the organization by working with the Operations Manager and managed IT vendor.
