Community Engagement Specialist

The Community Engagement Specialist supports the development and facilitation of community outreach initiatives to strengthen connections between Pima County departments and the public community. This part-time position assists in fostering communication, collaboration, and participation to enhance community involvement and support organizational efforts.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in implementing and supporting promotional activities related to the advertisement and marketing of community programs or services;
  • Supports the planning and participation in administrative and operational activities for community engagement programs;
  • Collaborates with county departments and the public to support community engagement through various programs, outreach events, and educational activities;
  • Assists in identifying and addressing barriers to participation for culturally and economically diverse communities, including currently and historically marginalized groups;
  • Helps establish and maintain liaison relationships and coordinates community engagement activities with other departments, public and private agencies, and organizations;
  • Provides support services to county and public associations, including assistance with communications, newsletters, activity planning, public relations, outreach efforts, and general information;
  • Assists in organizing and facilitating community engagement activities and events;
  • Supports the maintenance of related webpages and social media accounts;
  • Assists in collecting and analyzing data, preparing reports, and compiling statistical materials for management review;
  • Helps monitor and track expenditures related to community services or initiatives, contributing to data collection and reporting.
Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in public relations, communications, social work, community development, or a closely related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment, AND two (2) years of experience in community outreach, engagement, or a related area.

(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)

OR:

One (1) year of experience with Pima County in a relevant position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Experience working with people of diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Experience coordinating events, programs, or services across departments and/or with community-based organizations.
  • Experience with case management, data tracking, and outcomes reporting.
  • Experience working with everyday digital tools (email, browsers, Microsoft Office Suite/Google Workspace, video conferencing platforms).

Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources.

Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates:
Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination.

Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services' review and approval of the candidate's driving record.

Special Notice Items:
The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Some positions may require completion of a satisfactory personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems.
