POSITION SUMMARY

This position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In‑Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). It may be responsible for coverage at multiple locations. The role includes collection and receipt of biological specimens into the department, proper entry into the company's computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and/or distribution of these specimens to the proper analytical area.

It also includes responsibility for pre and post aspects of analytical testing and performs specified analytical testing as assigned. All functions are performed according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.

CORE FUNCTIONS
  • Collect specimens, process specimens in the general laboratory or referral laboratory, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity. In IOP locations, manage client relationships within compliance regulations.
  • Enter and verify patient demographics, location, physician data, tests requested, time and date of collection, clinical information, and all other data from requisitions and computer‑generated orders. Verify accuracy of entered information, appropriateness of specimens, and aliquot and label specimens according to department procedures. Deliver specimens to the technical area timely and/or perform initial processing and preparation for transport. Assist in monitoring workflow and training new employees.
  • Focus on quality by ensuring accuracy, completeness, legible documentation, and adherence to protocol. Maintain familiarity with procedures, use documentation to record communications, and generate reports for patient reporting and quality assurance. Meet departmental standards for productivity and quality. Participate in committees or Six‑Sigma teams and maintain acceptable specimen rejection rates.
  • Participate in departmental financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies and materials, avoid excessive waste, and support initiatives to reduce costs and improve service. Basic knowledge of billing and commitment to an error‑free work environment.
  • Communicate courteously and professionally with internal and external customers, interact with coworkers with emphasis on teamwork and customer service, resolve basic service issues, attend meetings, and remain current with internal/external communications.
  • Acknowledge and understand the importance of Patient Rights and privacy (HIPAA).
  • QUALIFICATIONS
    • Minimum age 18.
    • High School diploma or equivalent, as required by state regulations.
    • Basic knowledge of department resource materials.
    • Completion of a phlebotomy program or phlebotomy experience.
    • May require DHS fingerprinting certification or the ability to obtain it.
    • Valid state driver’s license in the state of employment and eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.
    • Float positions require travel, flexible hours, and availability to cover multiple locations including mobile and in‑office phlebotomy sites with minimal notice.
    • Progression through career ladder II‑IV subject to completion of career ladder requirements.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bilingual (Spanish/English).
    • Knowledge of medical terminology.
    • Additional related education and/or experience.
    RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Assist in the collection, receipt, and processing of biological specimens.
    • Maintain accurate documentation and data entry in the company’s computer system.
    • Perform quality checks and assure compliance with HIPAA and department protocols.
    • Engage with patients, healthcare professionals, and vendors to facilitate specimen collection and laboratory operations.
    • Participate in workflow monitoring, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Manage supplies, minimize waste, and support departmental cost‑saving efforts.
    WORK LOCATION & SHIFT

    Position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In‑Office Phlebotomy (IOP), or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS) with potential coverage across multiple sites during night shifts.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently. Lift, push, or pull up to 25 lbs. Manual dexterity, color discrimination, and rapid assimilation of instructions. Use of computer, printers, copiers, telephone, fax, and department equipment.
