Central Sterile Processing is an ancillary department of the Operating Rooms in which medical/surgical supplies and equipment are decontaminated, processed, sterilized, stored and used for patient care. This takes place in a sterile lab-type setting behind the scenes.
Position SummaryThis position demonstrates accountability for operating room readiness, ensuring sterile surgical instrumentation and disposable supplies are complete and ready for a procedure prior to the preceding patient leaving the operating room. It is responsible for the care and handling of all general and specialty instrumentation, including cleaning, decontamination, disassembly/reassembly, quality assurance, instrument identification, set assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instrumentation for Peri Op Services, hospital departments, and clinics.
CoreFunctions
- Provides decontamination and sterile processing support to Peri Op Services, ED, ICU, hospital-wide departments, clinics both on and off campus, and ambulatory surgery centers. Supports the management of sterile surgical instrumentation and disposable patient care supplies. May include decontamination of surgical instruments, assembly/sterilization, sterile instrument storage, case cart support, OR core tech support and high-level disinfection.
- Decontaminates, assembles, and packages surgical instruments following established protocols and instructions for use. Performs required quality assurance, repairs, reassembly, documentation, sterility handling, and storage of specialized surgical instruments. Maintains sterilization logs and quality assurance records related to decontamination, HLD disinfection, and sterilization.
- Interprets the surgical schedule and medical terminology as it pertains to procedures requiring sterile instrumentation. Addresses and communicates special needs to minimize delays to surgery. Responds to emergent calls from the Operating Room, performs preliminary investigation, determines priority level of instrumentation requests, and directs services to ensure OR priorities are completed in a timely manner.
- Differentiates surgical instrumentation ownership (surgery-owned, consignment/loaner, hospital department, surgeon, ambulatory surgery center, clinics on/off campus). Tracks instruments with paper logs or computer systems and reports replacements to maintain inventory and readiness of sets.
- Uses specialized equipment for decontamination, high-level disinfection, and sterilization according to manufacturer recommendations and hospital policy. Operates steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers; operates automated instrument washers, ultrasonics, flush pumps, visualization devices, and cart washers, including high-level disinfectors where supported.
- Operates quality assurance testing equipment for flexible endoscopic scopes, transesophageal ultrasound probes, and insulation defect detectors for laparoscopic and energy-based instruments. Uses heat detection devices to ensure steam-sterilized instruments are safe for use. Operates demagnetizers for certain instruments and uses borescopes to inspect inner channels.
