Health Unit Coordinator – Entry Level
Full‑Time Day Shift (Rotating weekends and holidays). You will have the opportunity to use our self‑scheduling tool and receive a flat $1/hr weekend shift differential in addition to an 18% night shift differential.

  • Day Shift: 6:00 am – 6:30 pm | Night Shift: 6:00 pm – 6:30 am
  • No set day schedules
  • Weekend rotations required
  • Rotating holidays required (1 major and 1 minor)
  • Flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential and an 18% night shift differential when applicable

Banner – University Medical Center South is a comprehensive academic medical center that includes an Emergency department, a Level I Trauma Center, and a Behavioral Health Pavilion. We are an Arizona Department of Health Services–accredited Cardiac Receiving Center, a Nurses Improving Care for Health system Elders‑designated senior‑friendly hospital, and staffed by full‑time faculty of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.

Position

Summary

This position is responsible for a variety of administrative support functions and customer service for an assigned patient care area. It promotes an organized, efficient delivery of care, facilitates communication between physicians, nurses, and patients, calls in consults, and acts as a liaison with all other internal departments and external contacts.

Core Functions
  • Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support overall operating efficiency and effective communication throughout the department, resolves customer problems, and follows through to appropriate staff.
  • Processes patient admissions, records bed assignments, creates face sheets, prints patient labels, and orders outside records from other facilities and physician offices.
  • Maintains a complete patient record with admission, transfer, discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms; ensures all reports and chart forms are scanned or filed; labels and secures charting forms; maintains educational material supplies; may perform QC/validations.
  • Enters pending discharges into the system, coordinates patient appointments for procedures and treatments required prior to discharge, and processes patient discharges.
  • Maintains adequate levels of office, dietary, and medical supplies; completes requisition forms and reconciles supply orders upon delivery.
  • Monitors and tracks electronic equipment such as patient  and laptops; ensures all are accounted for and functional.
  • Works under local supervision, responsible for assigned unit; operates in a fast‑paced, sometimes stressful environment with a strong focus on customer service; interacts with unit secretaries, staff at all levels, patients, families, physicians, case managers, and external customers.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • One year of medical clerical experience (hospital or physician office) or prior customer‑service experience; excellent organizational, human‑relations, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy; proficiency with commonly used office software and keyboarding skills.
  • Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (required for behavioral health positions) and Arizona Criminal History Affidavit (required upon hire).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program and BLS certification.
  • Additional related education and/or experience.
