Cryogenics Technician II – ORP Core Facilities, University of Arizona

The Cryogenics Technician II within the ORP Core Facilities Cryogenics and Compressed Gas Facility prepares cylinders and tanks to be filled with cryogenic liquids and gases for distribution to campus clients and users in the scientific community. The incumbent fills orders, maintains records, delivers full cylinders and retrieves empty ones, performs preventative maintenance as needed, and troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical problems of cryogenic systems and containers.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists with the transfer of cryogenics liquids from the large helium system or nitrogen tank to smaller cryogenic containers for distribution. Loads and unloads cryogenic products such as argon, helium and nitrogen in liquid and gas forms, dry ice and liquid carbon dioxide.
  • Delivers and retrieves empty cylinders, valve connectors, replacement fittings and cryogenic supplies from campus locations or external vendors.
  • Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks or dollies to move cryogenic containers or reorganize inventory.
  • Fills orders and issues cryogenics products and supplies per client request, and documents transactions.
  • Prepares requests for supplies, computes costs, and keeps records of the Cryogenics Facility’s supply inventory. Uses computerized systems to generate invoices, receipts and track inventory.
  • Informs supervisor of the need for additional standard stock items or cryogenics products.
  • Diagnoses mechanical problems of cryogenic systems and containers such as removing ice plugs, detecting leaks, fixing and/or replacing relief valves on cryogenic vessels.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Possession of a Commercial driver’s license, minimum Class C with a hazardous materials endorsement upon employment and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks or dollies to move cryogenic containers or equipment.
