The Payroll Technician position at the City of Tucson’s Human Resources Department is responsible for supporting the organization’s payroll processing, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Payroll Supervisor. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities- Assists in accurately recording and updating payroll records, including union deductions, parking deductions, charity contributions, and other approved employee deductions. Processes employee final payouts following state and federal law timelines. Utilizes payroll software to process payroll transactions, audits employee timecards, and manages direct deposit setups. Identifies and escalates complex or sensitive employee payroll issues to leadership and management for timely resolution.
- Addresses employee questions related to payroll, deductions, proper entry of schedules, accurate time off codes and timecards. Corresponds with departments, employees, employee beneficiaries and dependents, outside entities such as banks, city vendors, unions through various communications. Works closely with team to ensure all tasks for division are completed in a timely manner.
- Completes verification of employment related to employee pay information. Checks and confirms that employee‑selected payment methods (e.g., direct deposit, checks) are correctly entered into the payroll system. Processes child support payments, garnishments, and court‑ordered deductions in accordance with legal requirements. Reviews that contributions align with federal regulations for employees on extended military leave.
- Assists with ensuring that all payroll processing aligns with city‑specific regulations and federal laws. Pulls reports from the timekeeping system to review and verify that employees’ logged hours match actual work schedules. Assists with audits of the time records and final payments for employees who are leaving the organization and submits for review. Prevents over‑accumulation and ensures employees are compensated according to union regulations.

Minimum QualificationsEducation:
Six (6) months post high school
Experience:
Two (2) years of relevant experience
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.
License/
Certifications:
A valid and unrestricted driver’s license with two (2) years of licensed driving is required.
Experience in Payroll and Timekeeping
Data Entry or Billing and/or Account
