Position: CNC Operator I - Weekend Shift

Position Overview

The CNC Operator 1 is responsible for operating CNC machinery to produce precision parts and components. This role requires a strong focus on safety, quality, and efficiency. The CNC Operator 1 will work under the supervision of senior operators and supervisors to ensure that production goals are met while adhering to company policies and procedures.

Weekly Schedule

Weekend Shift: Thursday 12pm-4pm, Friday‑Sunday 5am-5pm.

Core Competencies
  • Health, Safety and Environmental:
    Proper selection and use of PPE, maintain safe work habits, recognize hazards, follow hazardous communication protocols, implement lockout/tagout, operate mobile equipment and cranes, ensure machine guarding, follow JM Life Critical Policies, manage waste, maintain housekeeping.
Computer/Data Entry
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft O365 applications (Outlook, SharePoint, Excel, Word).
  • Perform quality control inspections on the machine and report deficiencies via applicable quality reporting systems.
  • Document work orders via SAP ERP system and other required documentation.
  • Locate and use SOPs via SharePoint system.
  • Navigate and utilize computer‑based training modules for safety and compliance.
General Industry Tool Use
  • Effectively use common hand and power tools such as drills, grinders, deburring tools, surface grinders.
Measuring & Shop Math
  • Use precision measuring tools (tape measures, scales, micrometers, calipers) to perform dimensional tolerancing.
  • Apply basic shop math including measurements, geometry, volume, and area.
Blueprint Interpretation
  • Interpret blueprints and understand entry-level GD&T.
Job/Trade Specific Machine Maintenance
  • Conduct basic machine maintenance and pre‑use inspections.
Material Handling & Calibration
  • Handle and identify materials including alloys.
  • Verify calibration of measuring instruments such as gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
Set‑Up Notes
  • Apply set‑up notes and make programming adjustments/updates.
Tolerances & Production Standards
  • Hold required tolerances, perform visual inspections, meet production standards, and isolate causes of out‑of‑tolerance part features.
Part Quality
  • Complete finishing and deburring on parts as necessary.
CNC Operations
  • Perform entry‑level CNC operations (start‑up, safe operations, shut‑down).
  • Operate in a production cell with multiple work centers.
  • Understand entry‑level speeds and feeds, tool touch‑off, and setting offsets.
  • Load, feed, unload work pieces.
  • Perform tool changes, including jaws and cutting tools/holders.
  • Properly install and utilize task‑specific fixturing.
  • Knowledge of G and M code as applies to CNC machining.
Continuous Improvement
  • Help develop continuous improvement ideas and fixture design.
Department Specific Requirements
  • Disc CNC Lathe Operations:
    Conduct entry‑level CNC lathe operations and troubleshoot.
  • Fanuc Controls:
    Operate Fanuc controls and set coordinates for lathes. Read G code and suggest code edits.
  • E‑Beam Operations:
    Perform entry‑level E‑Beam operations, start‑up, safe operations, shut‑down.
  • Prepare discs for E‑Beam drilling operations; troubleshoot, clean, and change filaments.
  • Proficiency per Disc Department Skills Matrix.
Minimal Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of CNC machinery and operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to learn and follow safety protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree or certificate in CNC Machining or similar program from an accredited institution.
  • 3+ years of CNC operation experience with live tooling and multiple axis machining.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Standing for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination.
Work Environment
  • Manufacturing plant with exposure to noise, dust, and machinery.
  • Use of personal protective equipment as required.
