Unit Information

This is a 33‑bed unit with all private rooms. Two rooms serve as video epilepsy monitoring rooms. We care for newborn infants to young adults with medical/surgical and orthopedic patients, including scoliosis, fractures, congenital repairs, cranial surgeries, and diabetics. All nursing staff is PALS certified and completes an EKG class. Parents are allowed to be in the room 24/7. The patient‑to‑RN ratio is 1:5‑6 with PCT support.

Summary

Coordinates patient‑care planning with other disciplines using the nursing process and critical‑thinking skills to maintain patient safety and well‑being.

Essential Functions
  • Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, and consults with specialists as needed.
  • Obtains initial nursing histories, assesses patient conditions, and develops care plans.
  • Review preceding shift reports and conduct thorough rounds of all units.
  • Notify physicians of any unusual events or problems requiring consultation.
  • Works with the interdisciplinary team to implement patient instruction and provide informational materials to patients and families.
  • Assess and adjust nursing care processes to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Identify and resolve workplace health and safety issues.
  • Provide direct patient care with aseptic techniques.
  • Manage IV lines, ensure sterile techniques, and oversee safe patient movement and positioning.
  • Administer pharmacological vasodilator medications for nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging per Imaging Services Practice Standards.
  • Comply with policies, procedures, regulations, and standards; take corrective action when violations occur.
  • Orient, instruct, and educate assigned personnel.
  • Support and model TMC values of integrity, community, compassion, and dedication.
  • Adhere to TMC organizational and department‑specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies, and standards.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education

Graduation from a nationally accredited nursing program. Some positions may require additional training related to specific skill areas such as EP, which includes instructional programs in intra‑cardio echocardiogram and electrophysiology, with 30 ablation procedures.

Experience

One year of nursing experience in an acute‑care setting preferred. Positions assigned to EP require two (2) years of EP experience or demonstrated competency in all EP lab procedures.

Licensure or Certification

Current RN licensure permitting work in the State of Arizona and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Departments such as OR, Ambulatory Surgery, Pediatrics/PICU, PACU, and GI Lab require advanced life‑support certification (ACLS and PALS). Additional certifications may be required for some specialties, such as EP certification from the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners for cardiac electrophysiology competency.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of direct patient care and critical‑care procedures, techniques, tools, and responses to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Knowledge of exam indicators, contraindications, and patient preparation.
  • Skill in communicating clearly and concisely with staff and physicians.
  • Skill in reading 12‑lead EKG.
  • Skill demonstrated in assigned disciplines such as EP, directly involved in patient care.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action.
  • Ability to speak and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
