Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

SUMMARY

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner performs psychiatric assessments as needed and participates in the ongoing treatment of clients. The Psychiatric NP will start on a part-time productivity arrangement and may develop into a full-time position upon successful performance and business needs. The Psychiatric NP may offer services to both Adult and Children/Adolescent population.

DUTIES
  • Conduct psychiatric assessments as needed and make treatment recommendations.
  • Initiate, renew, or modify psychotropic medications of clients.
  • Identify possible medical problems and arrange referral to PCP or other medical facility.
  • Consult psychiatrist for complicated psychiatric problems, which are minimally familiar to NP.
  • Provide consultation and education to clients and staff about psychotropic medications as clinical load allows and as requested by supervisor.
  • Maintain client charts and records according to established guidelines and procedures.
  • Attend and participate in staff and team meetings as requested by medical director.
  • May supervise the clinical work of nursing staff at the discretion of medical director.
  • May provide medical orientation and training to other staff members including in-service training sessions as requested by medical director.

  • Coordinate all care and services required to enhance and facilitate the optimal physical and behavioral health wellness of persons served within a trauma-informed care framework. This includes:
    1) facilitating communication between medical and behavioral health practitioners/systems;
    2) assisting with scheduling of and compliance with preventative and specialty physical health interventions;
    3) integrating treatment interventions to address both the physical and behavioral health needs of the person/family concurrently;
    4) assisting persons/families served with education and resources outlining the interplay of physical and behavioral health issues on overall wellness and quality of life.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of a certificate as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner from the State of Arizona.
  • Candidates with 3 years post‑graduation clinical experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
  • Ability to perform a complete psychiatric evaluation, including medical symptoms, history and treatment that may be related to psychiatric symptomatology.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of all psychotropic medications that currently have general acceptance for use in psychiatry.
  • Working knowledge of the major risks and benefits of the medications, both as single agents and in combinations with other psychotropics.
  • Must show ability to find needed information about psychiatric illnesses and medications in a timely fashion.
  • Must be able to initiate and maintain medication plans that are likely to be followed and tolerated by the client.
  • Must be familiar with interpretation of laboratory tests that are frequently ordered in the clinical care of psychiatric clients.
  • Must be able to work with psychiatrists and to ask for consultation when it is appropriate to do so.
  • Must be able to integrate available data on clients in a sophisticated way, taking into account the source and reliability of the information.
  • Ability to interact with clients, their families, La Frontera employees, and community professionals and agencies in an appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively on a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of the cultural characteristics of various minority groups or a willingness to become familiar with these characteristics and to use the knowledge in the care of La Frontera clients.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
