Responsibilities

• Serves as a resource to teammates, support services, and physicians; working side by side with scrub to help maintain the sterile field in the operating room and ensure that the sterile field is not compromised during the procedure.
• Promotes and supports growth of others through precepting, mentoring, and orientation when appropriate, acting as a positive, clinical role model to facilitate staff development and provide pertinent feedback to managers or designees.
• Keeps the surgical area clean and organized, removing instruments and sponges as they are used during the procedure.
• Assists in the room turnover process, ensuring that the surgical room is sterile and safe for the patient and that the goals of the unit are met to improve room utilization.
• Maintains environment and supply inventory, including procurement of necessary supplies and equipment, and alerts administration of these needs in a timely manner.
• Prepares the patient for the procedure, handles preparation for the operating room, educates the patient before surgery, and participates in patient handoff during transitions.
• Engages in ensuring that OR metrics and process improvement work are implemented, providing solutions and action plans to reach departmental metrics and goals.
• Assesses the patient’s condition before a surgical procedure and collaborates with a physician to develop the care plan during surgery.
• Assumes other related responsibilities as required and assigned.

Education: Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited program is required;
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is preferred.

Experience: Three years of previous experience in an acute OR setting, with at least 12 months as a Registered Nurse in the Orthopedic specialty area, is preferred.

• A current, valid RN license in the state of practice or equivalent per state regulations.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
• Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
• Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.

• Validation and certification of competencies for the duties and responsibilities of a perioperative team member, including annual skill maintenance requirements.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing, and the skill of listening.
• Skill to provide excellent customer service to patients, physicians, visitors, and other health care teammates, promoting a positive work environment.

• Strong attention to detail and physical stamina to handle long, arduous work hours.
• Ability to work in an environment that frequently produces high levels of stress and mental fatigue, and willingness to maintain a flexible work schedule as needed.
• Ability to multi‑task and manage multiple work priorities while supporting teammates.

• Knowledge necessary to make appropriate clinical decisions and interactions relative to the specific age of a patient.
• Knowledge and understanding of disease processes and perioperative care.
• Knowledge of hospital organization, universal precautions, and maintenance of a safe environment.

Normal and emergent clinical environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, blood and body fluids, infectious disease, chemicals, or electrical hazards.
